NoteOwl vs Anarlog

An Anarlog alternative (formerly Hyprnote) with private AI built in

NoteOwl is an Anarlog alternative for Mac with private, on-device AI built in: like Anarlog, the open-source meeting notepad that used to be called Hyprnote, no bot joins the call, but NoteOwl’s transcription, summaries and chat run on your Mac with nothing to install or connect.

Voices are recognised across meetings, every promise is tracked, dictation into any app is free, and NoteOwl Pro is $79 lifetime, with no subscription.

What did you promise in your last meeting? NoteOwl remembers (0:51).

Quick question. What did you actually promise in your last meeting? …Yeah. Me neither.

This is NoteOwl. It’s a Mac app that takes notes on your calls. And no, there’s no bot joining your meeting.

The second the call ends, it’s written everything up. What got decided. Who’s doing what. And by when.

All those promises end up in one list. What you owe people… and what they owe you.

And here’s the part that got me. You can just ask it. “What changed on the Ferncastle pilot?” And it shows you exactly where that came from.

The whole thing runs on your Mac. Nothing gets uploaded. It even works with the Wi-Fi off.

NoteOwl. It’s free to download. Try it on your next call.

Why choose NoteOwl over Anarlog?

Because NoteOwl’s AI is part of the app and runs on your Mac from the start: no local model server to run, no provider to choose. On top of that, voices are recognised across meetings, every promise is tracked, and dictation in every app is free.

  • Private AI, built in

Transcription, speakers, summaries and chat run on your Mac with on-device AI models once the one-time download finishes: no second app, no provider to pick, no API key. To keep Anarlog’s summaries and chat on your computer, you install and run a local model server beside it.[3,4]

  • Offline, with nothing to prepare

Every NoteOwl feature works with Wi-Fi off after the model download. Anarlog works offline once you’ve set up a local model for transcription and another for summaries.[4]

  • Lifetime licence. No subscription.

NoteOwl Pro is $79 lifetime for your Mac. Anarlog Pro, the plan with its dictation, is $140 a year per person.[2]

  • Free dictation in every app

Tap fn and talk in any app: your words type at the cursor as you talk, and one tap polishes them in the right tone for that app — free and unlimited. Anarlog’s dictation is part of Pro and stops after five minutes.[7]

  • Knows every voice

Name a voice once and NoteOwl recognises it in every meeting after; the voice profile stays on your Mac. In Anarlog, better speaker identification is part of Pro.[2]

  • Summaries in 22 templates

Written on your Mac when the call ends. Summarize as rewrites it as a 1:1, a sales call, an interview or any other template.

  • Every promise, and everyone you meet

A board of what you owe and what you’re owed, a profile for everyone you meet, and prep pages from your Mac’s Calendar, all written on your Mac from your own meetings.

  • Ask every meeting, cited

Chat answers from all your meetings and cites the passage it used, or tells you when nothing matches — on your Mac, with Wi-Fi off.

NoteOwl's commitments board: I owe (13) and Owed to me (12), each promise with a due label, the person, and the meeting it came from
Commitments: what you owe and what you’re owed, sorted by what’s due.
NoteOwl Chat answering “What changed on the Ferncastle pilot since the kickoff?”: budget cut from $120,000 to $90,000, personal accounts only, 12 weeks to 8, with the meeting it came from and the passages it cites
A real answer in NoteOwl’s Chat, with the meeting and passages it came from.

Does Anarlog keep your meetings on your computer?

Its notes, transcripts and recordings, yes: Anarlog stores them on your device. Its summaries and chat run wherever the model you chose runs — a local server you install, or a hosted or API-key provider that receives the text.[3,5]

Anarlog, in its own words

“If you select Anarlog Cloud or another hosted provider, Anarlog sends the audio or text needed for that request to the selected provider.”[3]
“Choosing a local model for only one setting does not make the other setting local.”[4]
“Chat’s web search always sends your search query to a hosted research endpoint, even when Transcription and Intelligence are both fully local.”[4]
“In the desktop app: turn off Share usage data in Settings. That stops product analytics events and desktop session replay.”[6]

NoteOwl

Recording, transcription, speaker detection, summaries, search and chat all run on the Mac, with on-device AI models that come with the app. There is no model server to run, no provider to choose and no API key to add. Recordings, transcripts and notes are never uploaded, and the app has no analytics or telemetry.

The only network use: the one-time model download, update checks and, for Pro, signing in and an occasional licence check — none of which sends what you record. Offline AI meeting notes, and what stays on your Mac

What does NoteOwl remember across meetings?

Who said what, what was promised, and who you met. NoteOwl Pro recognises voices you’ve named, keeps a board of what you owe and are owed and a profile for everyone you meet, and answers questions across every meeting, citing the passage — all on your Mac.

Who said what. Every speaker is separated in any call app, and a voice you name once is recognised in every meeting after. Transcription with speaker identification

What was promised. Action items become a board of what you owe and what you’re owed, each linked to the moment it was said. Meeting action items, tracked

Who you meet. Everyone gets a profile written from your meetings, with your own private notes beside it. A personal CRM from your meetings

When is Anarlog the better choice?

When you want to read or change the code: Anarlog’s desktop app is open source under the MIT licence. If you want private AI that works on your Mac with nothing to set up, choose NoteOwl.[1]

Can you switch from Anarlog to NoteOwl?

Yes, starting with your next meeting. Download NoteOwl, and the next call you take is transcribed and summarized on your Mac. Recordings you already have as audio or video files can be imported into NoteOwl Pro and transcribed with speaker labels.

Your notes are never locked in: copy any note into any app, or export your meeting notes as Markdown, PDF, text or SRT — or all of your data at once as plain files.

FAQ

Questions about NoteOwl and Anarlog

Is Anarlog the same as Hyprnote?

Yes. Anarlog says its meeting notepad launched as Hyprnote in 2025, was renamed Char, and became Anarlog in 2026; Char is now a separate to-do notepad. NoteOwl is a different app: a private AI note taker for Mac whose on-device AI is built in.

Is there a Hyprnote alternative with AI built in?

Yes. NoteOwl takes meeting notes with no bot, like Anarlog (formerly Hyprnote), and its on-device AI models are part of the app: transcription, summaries and chat run on your Mac after a one-time download, with no local model server, provider or API key to set up.

Does Anarlog need Ollama or LM Studio?

Not always. To keep its summaries and chat on your computer, Anarlog uses a local server such as LM Studio, Ollama or Unsloth; otherwise they run on Anarlog’s hosted AI with Pro, or with a provider you add using your own API key. NoteOwl needs none of these: its on-device AI models are built in.

Is NoteOwl cheaper than Anarlog?

For dictation, yes: NoteOwl’s dictation is free forever, while Anarlog’s is part of Anarlog Pro, at $14 per person per month or $140 a year. NoteOwl Pro, with meetings, on-device AI and memory, is $79 lifetime, with no subscription. Anarlog’s on-device transcription costs nothing extra, with summaries through models you set up yourself. Prices checked on 30 October 2026.

Does NoteOwl work offline?

Yes. NoteOwl records, transcribes, summarizes and answers questions on your Mac, so everything works offline after the one-time model download, with nothing else to prepare. The app has no analytics or telemetry.

Does NoteOwl have a free plan?

Yes. Dictation into any app and voice notes are free forever, with no limit. Meeting notes, chat and the rest of Pro are free for 7 days in the app, with no card; after that Pro is $79 lifetime.

Does NoteOwl run on Windows or Linux?

No. NoteOwl is a Mac app for macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon with 16 GB of memory. Its AI runs on the Mac itself, which is what keeps your meetings on your computer with nothing to configure.
