German speech to text on your Mac

NoteOwl turns German speech to text on your Mac. Dictate into any app, record a meeting or import a recording, and it writes German with its umlauts, capitalised nouns and long compound words, using on-device AI models that work offline after a one-time download.

Below is a real sample: a short German work call about a recipe app’s next release, and NoteOwl’s transcript of it, unedited. Dictation is free and unlimited; meetings and imported recordings are part of NoteOwl Pro.

What does NoteOwl’s German transcript look like?

Here’s a sample recording, and NoteOwl’s transcript of it, unedited. On this sample NoteOwl matched 100% of the characters (punctuation and spacing aside).

The recording · 0:51

A short work call between Lena and Jonas. NoteOwl detected the language by itself.

  1. Hallo Jonas kurz zur neuen Version unserer Rezeptanwendung

In English: Hi Jonas, quickly about the new version of our recipe app:

  2. schaffen wir die Veröffentlichung am Montag? Ehrlich gesagt wird es knapp. Die Einkaufsliste läuft, aber der neue Dunkelmodus hat auf manchen Geräten noch zwei

In English: will we make the release on Monday? Honestly, it’s going to be tight. The shopping list works, but the new dark mode still has two

  3. Darstellungsfehler. Wie lange brauchst du, um die zu beheben? Mindestens drei, vier Tage

In English: display bugs on some devices. How long do you need to fix them? At least three or four days,

  4. und danach muss das ja auch noch geprüft werden. Gut, dann machen wir es so. Wir veröffentlichen am Montag ohne Dunkelmodus und liefern ihn mit der nächsten Version nach.

In English: and after that it still has to be checked. Okay, then let’s do this: we release on Monday without dark mode and ship it with the next version.

  5. Finde ich gut. Auf die Einkaufsliste warten die Leute sowieso am meisten. Genau kannst du bis Donnerstag die endgültige Fassung auf allen Geräten

In English: Sounds good to me. The shopping list is what people are waiting for most anyway. Exactly. Can you, by Thursday, the final version on all devices

  6. prüfen? Ja, mach ich. Ich schicke dir am Donnerstagabend eine kurze Zusammenfassung

In English: check? Yes, will do. I’ll send you a short summary on Thursday evening.

  7. prima, danke dir, dann bis Donnerstag

In English: Great, thanks. See you Thursday, then.

How does NoteOwl write German?

As standard written German. In the sample, every noun came out capitalised, the umlauts in Veröffentlichung, Geräten and prüfen were right, and compounds such as Einkaufsliste, Dunkelmodus and Darstellungsfehler stayed single words. Every character matched the script, punctuation and spacing aside.

Numbers came out as words, the way they were said: “zwei Darstellungsfehler” and “drei, vier Tage”. Weekdays kept their German form too, down to the one-word Donnerstagabend, and the casual “Ja, mach ich” was written as spoken, not corrected into something stiffer.

Punctuation is looser than spelling. Question marks landed where the questions were, and the commas before aber and um … zu were in place, but the comma after “Hallo Jonas”, the colon after “Rezeptanwendung” and the full stop after “Genau” were missing. A line can also stop before its sentence ends, so a German verb can open the next line, as “prüfen?” does above.

How do you dictate in German on a Mac?

Tap fn in any app, speak German and tap fn again: the words type at your cursor. German is one of the languages you can pin in Settings → Auto-Context → Spoken language, so NoteOwl doesn’t have to guess.

That setting starts on your Mac’s own language. If your Mac is set to English, choose German there, or Auto-detect to let NoteOwl recognise the language each time. Meetings you record follow the same setting.

Recordings you import don’t need it: NoteOwl always detects their language by itself. That is how the sample above was transcribed, with nothing chosen in advance.

Where is German spoken, and what do people record in it?

German is an official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Belgium, and the most widely spoken first language in the European Union. NoteOwl lists it as one language, without regional variants.

At work, that means the Besprechung and the Protokoll someone has to write afterwards, client and supplier calls, interviews and lectures. The sample is a product team deciding whether a recipe app ships on Monday, read in standard German from Germany.

Accuracy varies with accent. The sample doesn’t show Swiss German or a strong regional dialect, so if that is how you speak, try NoteOwl on a short recording of your own before you rely on it for a long meeting.

How do you get the best German transcripts?

Read the punctuation over before you send, and teach NoteOwl the names it doesn’t know. In the sample every word was right; every slip was punctuation, such as a missing comma, colon or full stop.

When you dictate, the panel offers Polish as you stop: it’s free, it tidies punctuation, and NoteOwl tells it to keep the language you spoke. For surnames, company names and product names, add a Vocabulary rule, part of NoteOwl Pro: type the word the way NoteOwl writes it, then the way it should be spelled, and every transcript after that uses your spelling.

Is German speech to text free in NoteOwl?
