What does NoteOwl’s Italian transcript look like?

Here’s a sample recording, and NoteOwl’s transcript of it, unedited. On this sample NoteOwl matched 96.8% of the characters (punctuation and spacing aside).

The recording · 0:53

A short work call between Giulia and Marco. NoteOwl detected the language by itself.

  1. e a quell'ora in sala la luce non è il massimo. Allora facciamo le foto fuori in terrazza. Con la luce del mattino vengono meglio. Ottima idea.

In English: and at that time the light in the dining room isn’t great. Then let’s take the photos outside, on the terrace. They come out better in the morning light. Great idea.

  2. Però la cucina deve preparare i piatti presto. Va avvisata. Te ne occupi tu e puoi mandare la lista dei piatti al fotografo entro venerdì? Certo,

In English: But the kitchen has to prepare the dishes early, so they need to be told. Will you take care of it, and can you send the list of dishes to the photographer by Friday? Sure,

  3. domani parlo con lo chef e mando tutto

In English: tomorrow I’ll talk to the chef and send everything

  4. entro venerdì. Perfetto. Io intanto

In English: by Friday. Perfect. Meanwhile I’ll

  5. aggiorno i prezzi sul sito. Il menù degustazione resta 45 euro.

In English: update the prices on the website. The tasting menu stays at 45 euros.

  6. D'accordo, ci sentiamo lunedì per gli ultimi dettagli. Ciao

In English: Okay, let’s talk on Monday about the final details. Bye.

How does NoteOwl write Italian?

With its accented vowels and apostrophes. In the sample, NoteOwl wrote è, però, venerdì and lunedì with their accents, and quell’ora and d’accordo with their apostrophes. Most questions kept their question marks, and long sentences their commas and full stops.

Numbers were mixed. “Sono dodici in tutto, con tre primi nuovi” came out in words, but “quarantacinque euro” came out as the digits 45 euro, the way a price list would print it. The word menu appears both ways in the transcript, menu and menù, and Italian accepts both.

One word slipped: “il fotografo può venire” came out as “può avvenire”, a real Italian word that sounds almost the same. The little “a” in “resta a quarantacinque euro” was dropped too.

How do you dictate in Italian on a Mac?

Tap fn in any app, speak Italian and tap fn again: the words type at your cursor. In Settings → Auto-Context → Spoken language, choose Auto-detect, because Italian isn’t one of the languages that menu can pin.

The setting starts on your Mac’s own language, so on a Mac set to English it needs changing before you dictate or record a meeting in Italian. Imported recordings are always detected automatically, as the sample above was.

Where is Italian spoken, and what do people record in it?

Italian is the first language of about 65 million people, in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City and the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. NoteOwl lists it as one language, without regional variants.

At work that means the riunione and the verbale written after it, calls with suppliers and clients, interviews and lessons. The sample is a trattoria planning its autumn menu and a photo shoot on the terrace, read in standard Italian.

Accuracy varies with accent and dialect. If you speak with a strong regional accent, try NoteOwl on a short recording of your own before you rely on it for a long meeting.

How do you get the best Italian transcripts?

Check prices and verbs, and teach NoteOwl the names it doesn’t know. In the sample, the things to look at were a price written in digits and a verb swapped for its sound-alike.

For surnames, dishes and brand names, add a Vocabulary rule, part of NoteOwl Pro: type the word as NoteOwl writes it, then as it should be spelled. The rules are applied on your Mac to everything NoteOwl transcribes after you add them.
