A real sample

What does NoteOwl’s Russian transcript look like?

Here’s a sample recording, and NoteOwl’s transcript of it, unedited. On this sample NoteOwl matched 98.4% of the characters (punctuation and spacing aside).

The recording · 0:48

A short work call between Ольга and Дмитрий. NoteOwl detected the language by itself.

  1. шестая

    In English: The sixth?

  2. не слишком щедро, может десятая

In English: Isn’t that too generous? Maybe the tenth?

  3. десятая. Это долгое. Люди потеряют интерес. Давай остановимся на шестой, а через месяц посмотрим на цифры. Ладно, договорились. Тогда до

In English: The tenth takes too long. People will lose interest. Let’s settle on the sixth, and look at the numbers in a month. Okay, deal. Then by

  4. четверга я настрою это в приложении и сам все проверю. Отлично. А я подготовлю текст для рассылки и объявления на кассу. Когда запускаем

In English: Thursday I’ll set it up in the app and check everything myself. Great. And I’ll prepare the text for the mailing and a notice for the till. When do we launch?

  5. в понедельник, как и планировали? Да, с понедельника. Хорошо, тогда созвонимся в четверг. Спасибо. Давай до связи.

In English: On Monday, as planned? Yes, from Monday. Good, then we’ll call on Thursday. Thanks. Sure, talk soon.

Lines copied from NoteOwl’s transcript exactly as it wrote them, mistakes included. The English beside each line is our translation for readers, not NoteOwl output.

How does NoteOwl write Russian?

In Cyrillic with ordinary punctuation, using е where standard spelling allows ё. The sample transcript has пройдемся, все готово and все проверю where the script had ё, which is how most people type Russian anyway.

If your house style keeps ё, as a publisher or a school might, add it back when you edit. Ordinal numbers stayed as words, шестая and десятая, and the dash in «каждая шестая чашка — в подарок» was left out.

What did NoteOwl get wrong in the Russian sample?

Very little: 98.4% of characters matched. It joined за сколько into засколько, wrote это долгое for это долго and объявления for объявление. The quick exchange «Шестая? Не слишком щедро? Может, десятая?» came out with no question marks.

That last point is the one to watch in real meetings. Short questions fired back and forth can lose their question marks, and a question can run on into the answer after it, as «Когда запускаем» did here.

Does Russian need to be selected anywhere?

No, NoteOwl recognises Russian from the audio. Do glance at Settings → Auto-Context → Spoken language, though. It can pin English, Hindi, Spanish, French or German but not Russian, so for Russian it should read Auto-detect.

If it reads English, its starting value on an English-language Mac, dictation and calls are decoded with a Latin-only vocabulary and not one Cyrillic letter can come out. Imports are exempt: NoteOwl detects each imported file’s language on its own.

How do vocabulary rules work with Russian words?

A Pro vocabulary rule swaps what NoteOwl writes for what you want, such as засколько → за сколько. Rules only match a whole Cyrillic word and ignore capitals, so one rule also covers the word at the start of a sentence.

Russian names change with case, so one person can appear as Дмитрий, Дмитрия and Дмитрию in the same call. Give each misspelled form its own rule, not just the one in the dictionary.

Where is Russian transcription used?

Russian is an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and a daily working language for many teams in Israel, Germany, the Baltic states and the US. The recordings people bring are supplier and client calls, research interviews and lectures.

Is Russian speech to text free in NoteOwl?

Yes, for dictation. Speaking Russian into any app is free and unlimited, forever, like voice notes. Meetings, imported recordings, summaries, Chat and custom vocabulary are part of NoteOwl Pro.

NoteOwl Pro is $79 once for one Mac, with a 7-day free trial in the app and no card. Everything runs on your Mac, with the same on-device AI models on both plans.

FAQ

Questions about Russian transcription

Is Russian dictation free in NoteOwl?

Yes. Free dictation has no word or time limit: tap fn, speak Russian, tap fn again, and the Cyrillic appears at your cursor in whatever app you are using. Voice notes are free too. Meetings, imports, summaries, chat and memory are Pro, $79 once per Mac, with a no-card 7-day trial.

Can I transcribe Russian offline?

Yes. The speech models live on your Mac, and once they are downloaded no connection is needed. The first time you dictate Russian on Auto-detect, or import a file, NoteOwl may download a further part of the model, so do that once online.

Will NoteOwl recognise Russian without being told?

For anything you import, yes, every time. For dictation and calls it recognises Russian when Spoken language is set to Auto-detect; set to English, it won’t.

Can I import a Russian recording or video?

Yes, with Pro or during the trial. Import Recording in Transcripts accepts audio and video, from m4a and mp3 to wav and mp4, and you can also drag a file in. The Cyrillic transcript is produced locally, with each speaker labelled.

Does NoteOwl take notes in Russian-language meetings?

Yes, with Pro. It records the call from your own Mac, microphone and system sound, so there is no bot for anyone to admit. When you hang up you have the Russian transcript by speaker, a summary and the action items.

How accurate is Russian transcription in NoteOwl?

On the sample above, 98.4% of characters matched, not counting punctuation or spaces. Try your own recordings during the trial.

About NoteOwl

NoteOwl is private AI meeting notes and memory for the Mac. It captures meetings without a bot joining the call, labels every speaker, writes summaries and action items, and builds a memory of every conversation that you can chat with — fully offline, because the speech recognition and the AI run on the Mac itself. Dictation into any app is free; Pro is a one-time purchase.
