How it works

How do you convert SRT to VTT?

Drop the .srt file on the converter, or paste its text, and choose VTT. It adds the WEBVTT header, changes the comma in every time to a full stop and keeps your captions and speaker names. Copy the result, or download the .vtt file.

  1. 1

    Add your file

Drop an .srt or .vtt file on the box, choose it from your files, or paste its text. Your browser reads it; nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2

    Pick a format

VTT, SRT or plain text. Keep or remove speaker names, and for text, merge each speaker’s lines into paragraphs.

  3. 3

    Copy or download

Copy the result, or download it as a .vtt, .srt or .txt file, or as a Word document (.docx).

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Mostly the first line and the times. A VTT file starts with WEBVTT and writes times with a full stop (00:00:01.240); an SRT file numbers every caption and uses a comma (00:00:01,240). VTT can also carry styling and speaker tags for video on web pages.

How do you convert SRT to text?

Choose Plain text. The converter removes the caption numbers and times, joins lines that were split across captions, and starts a new paragraph when the speaker changes, so a caption file reads like a transcript. Untick Keep speaker names for the words alone.

Which caption and transcript files work?

Any SRT or WebVTT file, including the .vtt transcripts Zoom and Microsoft Teams save after a recorded meeting. It also reads SBV captions and pasted transcripts with one “Name: words” line per turn, and keeps every speaker’s name it finds.

Zoom transcript (.vtt)
What you getEach caption starts with the speaker’s name, so names carry into SRT and text.
Microsoft Teams transcript (.vtt)
What you getSpeaker names come from Teams’ voice tags; the long cue IDs are dropped.
SRT from a video editor, YouTube or NoteOwl
What you getNumbers, times and text; a “Name:” at the start of a line is read as the speaker.
SBV captions
What you getRead and converted like SRT.
A pasted transcript with no times
What you getOne “Name: words” line per turn; it becomes clean text (SRT and VTT need times).

How do you get a transcript when there is no caption file?

Record the call with NoteOwl. It takes meeting notes without a bot on your Mac, with a transcript that labels every speaker. For a recording you already have, NoteOwl imports it, transcribes it with on-device AI models and saves subtitles as an SRT file.

FAQ

Questions about converting SRT and VTT

Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?

No. NoteOwl’s SRT to VTT converter runs entirely in your browser: the file is read and converted on your device, and the download is made there too. Nothing is sent to NoteOwl or anyone else, and there is no account to create.

What is a VTT file?

A VTT file (WebVTT, short for Web Video Text Tracks) is a plain-text caption file for video on web pages. It starts with the line WEBVTT, then lists timed captions with times like 00:00:01.240. Zoom and Microsoft Teams also save meeting transcripts as VTT files. NoteOwl’s free converter turns a VTT file into SRT or clean text.

How do I convert VTT to text?

Drop the VTT file on NoteOwl’s free converter and choose Plain text. It removes the timestamps and tags, joins each speaker’s consecutive lines into a paragraph and keeps their names, ready to copy or download as a .txt file or a Word document.

Can I turn a Teams or Zoom transcript into a Word document?

Yes. Drop the .vtt transcript on NoteOwl’s converter, choose Plain text and press Download .docx. You get a Word document with one paragraph per speaker turn, which opens in Word, Pages and Google Docs.

Does converting SRT to VTT change the timings?

No. NoteOwl’s converter keeps every start and end time to the millisecond and only writes it in the other format’s style: SRT’s 00:00:01,240 becomes VTT’s 00:00:01.240. The caption text, line breaks and speaker names stay as they were.

Can I convert VTT to SRT for YouTube or a video editor?

Yes. Choose SRT and download the .srt file. NoteOwl’s converter numbers the captions from 1, writes the times in SRT’s format and drops VTT-only position and styling settings, which SRT can’t hold. YouTube and most video editors accept the result.

Can NoteOwl make subtitles from a recording?

Yes. NoteOwl imports an audio or video file on your Mac, transcribes it with on-device AI models, labels the speakers and saves the transcript as an SRT subtitle file. The SRT to VTT converter on this page is free and needs no download.
