NoteOwl vs Monologue

A Monologue alternative that keeps dictation and meetings on your Mac

NoteOwl is a Monologue alternative for Mac that does all of its work on the Mac itself: tap fn in any app, talk, and your words type at the cursor, polished in the right tone for that app — free, unlimited and offline.

NoteOwl Pro adds meeting notes with no bot in the call, voices recognised from one meeting to the next, and a memory you can ask about any meeting, with nothing uploaded — for $79 once instead of a subscription.

Free dictation for Mac: talk, and it types in any app (0:33). Recorded dictating into TextEdit; the words appear exactly as NoteOwl typed them.

Typing is slow. Talking isn’t.

Tap fn, and just talk.

(Dictating) “Um, so, quick update for the team. The budget’s ninety thousand, and, uh, we start on the twenty-first. Can you all send me your plans by Friday?”

Your words land right where you’re typing. In any app.

Tap Polish, and it’s tidied up. Filler words gone, punctuation fixed.

And it all runs on your Mac.

NoteOwl. Free to download. Dictation’s free, forever.

Why choose NoteOwl over Monologue?

Because everything happens on your Mac — dictation, the one-tap polish, meeting notes and chat — online or offline. Dictation is free with no word limit, and NoteOwl Pro adds meetings with no bot, voices recognised and a memory you can ask, for $79 once.

  • Free, unlimited dictation in every app

Tap fn in Mail, Slack, Notion or your code editor, talk, and tap again. Your words type at the cursor, and one tap polishes them in the right tone for that app. Monologue’s free trial includes 1,000 dictation words and 10 recorded Notes.[1]

  • Polished with Wi-Fi off

The polish runs on your Mac too, so it works offline. In Monologue’s local mode, smart cleanup and formatting still use its online service.[4]

  • Pay once. No subscription.

NoteOwl Pro is $79 once for your Mac. Monologue Pro is $144 a year, billed annually.[2]

  • Your meetings stay on your Mac

NoteOwl Pro records, transcribes and summarizes on your Mac, with nothing uploaded. Monologue uploads a Note’s audio when you stop recording, and stores the audio, transcript and summary in your account.[8,9]

  • Voices recognised, on your Mac

Name a voice once and it’s recognised in every meeting after. The voice profile stays on your Mac.

  • Bring the recordings you have

NoteOwl Pro transcribes audio and video files with speaker labels. Monologue says it doesn’t offer a general file-upload transcription workflow.[12]

  • Ask every meeting, even offline

In NoteOwl Pro, Chat answers from your own meetings and notes, inside the app, and cites the passage it used — or tells you when nothing matches.

  • Every promise, and everyone you meet

Also in Pro: a board of what you owe and what you’re owed, a profile for everyone you meet, and prep pages from your Mac’s Calendar.

Where does Monologue process your dictation and meetings?

In the cloud by default. Monologue calls remote transcription its recommended default, uses its online service for smart formatting even in local mode, and uploads meeting audio, then stores the audio, transcript and summary in your account.[4,8,9]

Monologue, in its own words

“Remote transcription is the recommended default … Audio is sent to Monologue’s processing service for transcription and smart formatting.”[4]
On local mode: “Smart cleanup and context-aware formatting still use Monologue’s online service.”[4]
“After you stop recording, Monologue uploads the audio and turns it into a transcript, summary, and speaker-separated conversation when the recording supports them.”[8]
“When you record a Note, Monologue stores the Note’s audio, transcript, and summary in your account so they can sync across your devices.”[9]

NoteOwl

Dictation, the polish, recording, transcription, speaker detection, summaries, search and chat all run on the Mac, with on-device AI models. Your dictations, recordings, transcripts and notes are never uploaded to NoteOwl or anyone else, and the app has no analytics or telemetry. The tone for each dictation is picked from the app you’re dictating into, on the Mac.

The only network use: the one-time model download, update checks and, for Pro, signing in and an occasional licence check — none of which sends what you say or record. Offline AI meeting notes, and what stays on your Mac

Does Monologue take meeting notes?

Yes. Since April 2026, Monologue Notes records a Mac’s microphone and system audio with no bot, then uploads it for a transcript, summary and action items[7,8,11]. NoteOwl Pro does that on your Mac, then keeps going: voices recognised, commitments, people and cited answers.

Who said what. NoteOwl separates every speaker in any call app, and a voice you name once is recognised in every meeting after; the voice profile stays on your Mac. Transcription with speaker identification

What was promised. Action items become a board of what you owe and what you’re owed, and everyone you meet gets a profile. Track meeting action items

What was said, months later. Ask Chat about any meeting, inside the app, and the answer cites the passage it came from — offline. Chat with your meetings

When is Monologue the better choice?

When you want a cloud service. Monologue transcribes in its cloud by default and keeps your Notes in your account, synced across your devices. If you want your words and your meetings on your Mac, online or offline, choose NoteOwl.[4,9]

Can you switch from Monologue to NoteOwl?

Yes, in a few minutes. Download NoteOwl, allow the permissions it asks for, and tap fn in any app: your words type at the cursor, turned into text on your Mac. Your next meeting can be recorded with NoteOwl Pro, free for 7 days.

NoteOwl sets the tone for each app for you — Mail gets a professional email, Slack a casual message — and you can change any of them in Settings → Auto-Context. Teach it your names and jargon with custom vocabulary (NoteOwl Pro), and they’re spelled your way in dictation and meetings. Recordings you already have as audio or video files can be imported into NoteOwl Pro and transcribed with speaker labels. And your words are never locked in: copy any note into any app, or export your meeting notes as Markdown, PDF, text or SRT — or all of your data at once as plain files.

FAQ

Questions about NoteOwl and Monologue

Is there a Monologue alternative that runs entirely on your Mac?

Yes. NoteOwl dictates into any Mac app and takes meeting notes, like Monologue, but it runs speech to text, the one-tap polish, meeting transcripts, summaries and chat on the Mac itself. Nothing is uploaded, and all of it works offline after a one-time model download. Monologue’s recommended default is cloud transcription, and it uploads meeting audio.

Is NoteOwl cheaper than Monologue?

For one person on one Mac, yes. NoteOwl dictation is free and unlimited, and NoteOwl Pro is $79 once, with a 7-day free trial and no card. Monologue Pro is $144 a year billed annually, or $15 a month billed monthly — $432 over three years at the annual price — and covers Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Prices checked on 27 September 2026.

Does Monologue upload meeting recordings?

Yes. For bot-free meeting notes, part of Monologue Pro, Monologue records your microphone and system audio on a Mac, then uploads the audio to Monologue for the transcript and summary, and keeps the audio, transcript and summary in your Monologue account. NoteOwl Pro also takes meeting notes with no bot, but it transcribes, summarizes and answers questions on your Mac, with nothing uploaded.

Does Monologue work offline?

Partly. On Apple silicon Macs, Monologue’s optional local mode gives a raw transcript without a network connection, but its smart cleanup and formatting use its online service, and Notes are uploaded for processing. NoteOwl runs dictation, the polish, meeting notes and chat on your Mac, so all of it works offline after a one-time model download.

Can NoteOwl transcribe audio files?

Yes. NoteOwl Pro imports MP3, WAV, M4A, AIFF, FLAC, AAC and MP4 files and transcribes them on your Mac with speaker labels, with no monthly limit. Monologue says it does not offer a general file-upload transcription workflow.

Is NoteOwl dictation really free?

Yes. Dictation into any app is part of NoteOwl Free, with no word limit, no account and no end date, and every dictation is saved as a voice note you can search, play and export. Rewrite by voice and custom vocabulary are NoteOwl Pro features: $79 once, after a 7-day free trial.

Does NoteOwl run on iPhone or Windows?

No. NoteOwl is a Mac app for macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon with 16 GB of memory. Its speech recognition and AI run on the Mac itself, which is what keeps your dictation and meetings off the cloud.

About NoteOwl

NoteOwl is private AI meeting notes and memory for the Mac. It captures meetings without a bot joining the call, labels every speaker, writes summaries and action items, and builds a memory of every conversation that you can chat with — fully offline, because the speech recognition and the AI run on the Mac itself. Dictation into any app is free; Pro is a one-time purchase.
