What does NoteOwl’s Portuguese transcript look like?

Here’s a sample recording, and NoteOwl’s transcript of it, unedited. On this sample NoteOwl matched 98.1% of the characters (punctuation and spacing aside).

The recording · 0:49

A short work call between Fernanda and Rafael. NoteOwl detected the language by itself.

  1. dá se eu terminar a edição até quinta-feira. Então está fechado. Lançamos no dia primeiro e o preço a gente mantenha em trezentos reais? Eu

In English: Yes, if I finish the editing by Thursday. Then it’s settled: we launch on the first. And the price, do we keep it at three hundred reais? I’d

  2. manteria talvez com um desconto para quem comprar na primeira semana

In English: keep it. Maybe with a discount for people who buy in the first week.

  3. boa ideia. Vamos dar vinte por cento de desconto na primeira semana, então

In English: Good idea. Let’s give twenty percent off in the first week, then.

  4. combinado. Eu termino a edição até quinta e te mando os vídeos para revisar. Perfeito, eu preparo a página de vendas e a mensagem de

In English: Deal. I’ll finish the editing by Thursday and send you the videos to review. Perfect, I’ll prepare the sales page and the announcement

  5. divulgação. Valeu, Rafael. Qualquer coisa

In English: message. Thanks, Rafael. If you need anything,

  6. me chama

    In English: just call me.

How does NoteOwl write Portuguese?

With cedillas, tildes and accents in place. In the sample, lançamento, edição, então and divulgação kept their ç and ã, página and vídeos their accents, and quinta-feira its hyphen.

Numbers came out in words, as they were said: oito aulas, duas últimas, trezentos reais, vinte por cento. Brazilian everyday speech, such as a gente, Valeu and me chama, was written as spoken, not formalised.

Two slips are worth knowing. A missed sentence break turned “Vamos. As oito aulas…” into “Vamos às oito aulas…”, and “a gente mantém” came out as “a gente mantenha”. Smaller ones: “E dá tempo de lançar no dia primeiro?” lost its question mark, and of the two goodbyes, only one “Valeu” made it in.

How do you dictate in Portuguese on a Mac?

Tap fn in any app, speak Portuguese and tap fn again: the words type at your cursor. In Settings → Auto-Context → Spoken language, choose Auto-detect, because Portuguese isn’t one of the languages that menu can pin.

The setting starts on your Mac’s own language, so on a Mac set to English, switch it to Auto-detect before you dictate or record a meeting in Portuguese. Recordings you import are always detected automatically, the way NoteOwl recognised the sample above.

Does NoteOwl understand Brazilian and European Portuguese?

NoteOwl lists both: Portuguese from Brazil and from Portugal. The sample is Brazilian Portuguese, with reais, a gente and Valeu, and NoteOwl recognised the language without being told.

Portuguese is the first language of about 250 million people, in Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique and beyond. At work that means the reunião and its ata, sales calls, client meetings, interviews and recorded courses like the one in the sample.

The sample doesn’t show a European Portuguese accent, so if that is how you speak, try NoteOwl on a short recording of your own first.

How do you get the best Portuguese transcripts?

Read the transcript once for sentence breaks, verb forms and question marks, which is where the sample slipped, and teach NoteOwl the names it doesn’t know.

For surnames, company names and product names, add a Vocabulary rule, part of NoteOwl Pro: type the word as NoteOwl writes it, then as it should be spelled, and every transcript after that uses your spelling. The rules are kept and applied on your Mac.
