Why we built NoteOwl

Many AI note takers join your call as a participant. Everyone sees the bot, some would rather it left, and the recording goes to that company’s servers. The notes then live in its app, behind a login, usually on a plan billed per person, per month.

That is a lot to give up for a summary. Client calls, board meetings, interviews and 1:1s are exactly the conversations you shouldn’t have to hand to a third party to remember.

Everything NoteOwl does with your conversations, the AI included, runs on your Mac: recording, transcription, telling speakers apart, summaries, action items and answers to questions about your meetings. Nothing you record is uploaded, so none of your conversations sit on a server to leak, sell or train on.

The app goes online for a short list of things: the one-time download of its on-device AI models, checking for updates, and, for the trial and NoteOwl Pro, signing in and a weekly licence check. Every connection is listed in what NoteOwl sends over the network. Once the models are downloaded, it works the same offline.

Your recordings and transcripts are files in a folder on your Mac. You can read and export them as Markdown, PDF, plain text or subtitles whenever you like, and take everything with you if you ever leave.

  NoteOwl records your microphone and your Mac’s audio. Nobody else in the call sees a bot join.

  Your audio, transcripts, summaries, notes and Chat stay on your Mac. None of NoteOwl’s connections can carry them.
