How it works
How do you convert MP4 to MP3?
Drop the MP4 on the converter or choose it. The page decodes the video’s sound track with your browser’s own decoder and encodes it as an MP3; the picture is skipped, so a long recording converts in a fraction of its running time. Then play and download the MP3.
- 1
Set the quality
For a meeting, lecture or podcast, 128 kbps keeps every word clear at about 1 MB a minute. Pick 192 or 320 kbps for music.
- 2
Add the MP4
Drop it on the box or choose it. On a phone, pick it from your photos or files.
- 3
Download the MP3
It keeps the video’s name with .mp3 at the end, and the MP4 itself isn’t changed.
What is an MP4 file?
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most common video file: a container that holds a picture track, usually H.264, HEVC or AV1, and a sound track, usually AAC. Phones, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, screen recorders and most websites save video as MP4.

| Where it comes from | What’s inside |
|---|---|
| Zoom recordings saved to your computer | An MP4 of the meeting, plus an audio-only M4A file |

| Android phone cameras | MP4 video with AAC sound |
| Videos downloaded from most websites and editors | MP4 with H.264, HEVC or AV1 video and AAC sound |
Is MP4 the same as M4A?
Nearly. They’re the same MPEG-4 container, and .m4a is the name used when the file holds only sound. That’s why an MP4’s AAC sound can be saved as an M4A without re-encoding: extract the audio as M4A to keep it exactly as recorded.
Why turn a meeting or lecture recording into an MP3?
To listen on the go, or to share just the sound. An hour-long meeting as a 128 kbps MP3 is about 58 MB, plays in any podcast or music app, and is easy to send where the video would be far too big.
Can you get a transcript of an MP4 instead?
Yes, on a Mac. NoteOwl imports MP4 videos and transcribes them on your Mac with on-device AI models, with each speaker labelled and notes written. Next time, it can take the meeting notes itself, with no bot in the call.
FAQ
Questions about converting MP4 to MP3
Is my MP4 video uploaded?
No. NoteOwl’s MP4 converter reads the video from your device and converts its sound inside your browser. A recording of a private meeting never leaves your computer, and nothing is sent to NoteOwl or anyone else.
Can I convert a Zoom or Teams recording to MP3?
Yes. Get the recording’s MP4 (Zoom saves local recordings to a Zoom folder in Documents; Teams keeps them in OneDrive or SharePoint), drop it on NoteOwl’s converter and save the MP3. Zoom’s audio-only M4A file converts the same way.
Does MP4 to MP3 lose quality?
A little: the video’s AAC sound is decoded and re-encoded as MP3. At 192 or 320 kbps the difference is very hard to hear, and for speech 128 kbps is plenty. To keep the sound exactly as it is, save it as M4A with NoteOwl’s extract audio tool instead.
Can I convert MP4 to MP3 on Android or iPhone?
Yes. NoteOwl’s converter works in Chrome on Android and in Safari on an iPhone or iPad. Tap Choose file, pick the video, and download the MP3 when it’s ready; it converts on the phone itself.
What is the largest MP4 it can convert?
NoteOwl’s converter takes videos up to 1 GB and 2 hours long in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 26 or later, which covers most meeting recordings. Older Safari versions convert videos up to 30 minutes long.
Can it convert other video files?
Yes. NoteOwl’s converter also takes MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos, and audio files such as M4A, WAV, AAC and FLAC. Older formats such as AVI, WMV and FLV aren’t supported.
