How it works

How do you transcribe a phone call?

Find the file your phone or call app saved and drop it here to turn the call recording to text. The converter cuts it at the pauses, transcribes each part and writes the conversation out with times. Then mark who is speaking and pull out what was agreed.

  1. 1

    Find the recording

On an iPhone it’s in Notes; with Phone by Google, in the call history; for a video call, wherever the app saved it.

  2. 2

    Drop it on the converter

The call is transcribed piece by piece, up to 30 minutes of it, and each paragraph opens with its time.

  3. 3

    Mark the two sides

Download the Word file and put a name or initials at the start of each turn.

Where do call recordings end up on a phone?

Usually not in the Files app. An iPhone keeps each recorded call in a Call Recordings folder in Notes, and Phone by Google keeps them in the call history. Both let you save or share the audio, so you can transcribe it here.

In select regions and languages, an iPhone also writes its own transcript of a recorded call in Notes, naming the speaker of each statement. Come here when there isn’t one, or when you need times, subtitles or a Word document.

Does the transcript show who said what on the call?

No. You get one timed transcript without names. A call has only two voices, though, and a pause of a second and a half starts a new paragraph, so many turns already sit in paragraphs of their own, ready for a name.

NoteOwl on a Mac does this part for you: it labels each speaker in a call recording you import.

A question ending a paragraph
It usually meansThe other side answers next
“Hi, it’s…” or “I’m calling about…”
It usually meansThe person who placed the call
A short “yes”, “right” or “okay”
It usually meansThe listener, cutting in
Two voices in one paragraph
It usually meansA quick exchange: split it before the reply

Why do phone calls transcribe worse than in-person recordings?

A phone network squeezes the voice into a narrow band and compresses it, then dropouts and people talking at once take their share. Speakerphone echo or a noisy room at either end makes it worse. A few habits keep the recording as clean as a call allows.

  1. 1

Record on the device that takes the call

A call saved by the phone or the call app is far cleaner than a second phone held near a loudspeaker.

  2. 2

Use a headset, not the speaker

It keeps your voice close to the microphone and the other side’s voice out of it.

  3. 3

    Say the numbers back

Repeating a date, a price or a reference number during the call puts it in the recording twice.

What do you do with a call transcript?

Use it to remember precisely. Copy the dates, prices and next steps into your notes, confirm them in a follow-up email, and keep quotes word for word wherever someone’s exact phrasing matters.

  • Sales calls

Needs, objections and the next step, laid out with a sales call template.

  • Support calls

The problem, what was tried and what was promised, in a support call template.

  • The follow-up

The agreed points, sent the same day. NoteOwl can draft that email from a recorded call.

  • Customer quotes

A customer’s own words, with the time beside them, for a case study or a product review.

FAQ

Questions about phone call transcription

Is phone call transcription here free?

Yes, without an account. Transcribe 3 calls a day, up to 30 minutes of each, and save the result as text, Word or subtitles.

Can I transcribe a call recorded on my iPhone?

Yes. Open the call in the Call Recordings folder in Notes, tap the recording, tap More and choose Save Audio Files. Save it to Files, then pick it on this page.

Can I transcribe a call recorded on Android?

Yes. In the Phone by Google app, open the caller’s History, choose the recorded call and tap Share to send the audio to an app you can open it from, such as email. Then choose that file here.

How long a call can it transcribe?

Up to 30 minutes per file. A longer call is transcribed that far and the page tells you; cut the rest into a second file, or use NoteOwl on a Mac, which has no length limit.

Can it transcribe a call in two languages?

Yes. Every half minute or so of the call is checked for its language on its own, so when the conversation switches, the transcript switches with it.

Is the call recording stored?

No. Your browser sends the call in short pieces over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards them. NoteOwl doesn’t store the recording or the transcript.

Can it transcribe a call while it’s happening?

No. This page works on a saved recording, after the call. NoteOwl on a Mac records the calls you take there and transcribes them on your Mac.
