Add captions to a Facebook video

To add captions to Facebook video posts, make the SRT with the free generator below: it saves the file under the name Facebook requires, such as your-video.en_US.srt, with the language code you pick. Then upload it from your profile, your Page or Meta Business Suite.

Choose your video or audio file

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video, or MP3, M4A or WAV audio. Up to 30 minutes of each file, 3 free files a day. The language is detected automatically.

Sharing talks and interviews on a Facebook Page? NoteOwl transcribes them on your Mac, unlimited, and saves SRT captions that name each speaker.

How it works

How do you make a Facebook-ready SRT file?

Drop the video on the generator and let it turn the speech into timed captions. Under the download buttons, the Facebook language picker starts on the language it heard and shows the exact file name. Change the code if you need to, then download the SRT.

  1. 1

    Add the video

The same file you’ll post, or have posted, on Facebook. Its sound on its own works as well.

  2. 2

    Check the language code

The picker shows the name the SRT will get, such as talk.en_US.srt. Choose another code to change it.

  3. 3

    Download SRT

Captions cover up to 30 minutes of the file. The name needs no editing.

How should a Facebook SRT file be named?

As filename.[language code]_[country code].srt, with the language in lower case and the country in upper case: a US English file is filename.en_US.srt. Facebook’s help says the codes are case sensitive. The generator here saves the SRT with that ending already.

The Facebook language picker lists the codes from Facebook’s own page. It starts on the one for the language spoken in your video, or English – US when there isn’t one; switch it when the video is meant for another country, for example English – UK.

English – US
Codeen_US
Saved aslaunch.en_US.srt
English – UK
Codeen_GB

Spanish
Codees_LA

Simplified Chinese – China
Codezh_CN

How do you add captions to a Facebook video on your profile?

Post the video first. Then find it on your timeline or Feed, click Options in the top right and Edit post, then Edit from composer and Add captions. Click Upload next to Upload captions, choose the SubRip (.srt) file from your computer and click Save.

  1. 1

    Find the post

Search for the video on your timeline or Feed.

  2. 2

    Options, then Edit post

Click Options in the top right, then Edit post.

  3. 3

    Edit from composer

Click it, then click Add captions.

  4. 4

    Upload, then Save

Click Upload next to Upload captions, pick the .srt and click Save.

How do you add an SRT to a Facebook Page video or reel?

For a Page video, add it while posting: once the video has uploaded, click Next, then Closed captions on the left, and choose to upload a SubRip (.srt) file rather than auto-generate captions. Click Next, then Post. For one already posted, use Options, then Edit post.

Reels managed in Meta Business Suite on a computer have a Closed captions & translations section, where Settings lets you upload a subtitle file. Tick Short lines for a vertical video under the generator’s buttons first, so each line fits the narrow frame.

What does Facebook require inside an SRT file?

Subtitles numbered in sequence from 1, each number used once; times written hh:mm:ss,fff; text encoded as UTF-8; and no spaces or lines after the last block. The generator writes the numbers, times and encoding that way.

Editing the file before you upload it? Keep those rules, and don’t leave blank lines or spaces after the last subtitle. The SRT editor fixes words in your browser. A file for another language comes from the subtitle translator; give it that language’s code in its name.

What if your Facebook video has several speakers?

Then NoteOwl is the better source. The Mac app transcribes recordings you import with on-device AI models, tells the voices apart and saves an SRT in which each caption starts with the speaker’s name, unlimited. Add the language code to its name and it’s ready for Facebook.

FAQ

Questions about Facebook video captions

What does en_US mean in a Facebook SRT file name?

It is the language and country code: en for English, US for the United States. Facebook’s rule is filename.[language code]_[country code].srt, language in lower case, country in upper case, so a UK English file ends in .en_GB.srt.

Does Facebook accept VTT caption files?

Facebook’s help asks for SubRip (.srt) files for video captions, so use the SRT. On this page it’s the only subtitle download that gets Facebook’s language code in its name.

Can I add captions from my phone?

Facebook’s help describes choosing the SRT from your computer, and the Meta Business Suite steps for reels on mobile have no captions step. Use a computer to upload the file.

Who sees the captions on my video?

Facebook’s help says people who watch a Page video with the sound off see the captions automatically, while people watching with the sound on need to turn captions on to see them.

Is there a length limit?

The free generator captions the first 30 minutes of each file, for up to 3 files a day, with no sign-up. In a longer video, the captions end at that point.

Is the video stored anywhere?

No. Your browser keeps the video and sends only short slices of its audio to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes them and deletes them. The SRT, file name and all, is made right in the page; NoteOwl saves nothing.
