Drop an M4V file here to turn M4V to text: the converter picks the M4V’s main sound track, decodes it in your browser and returns a transcript with a time on every paragraph, while the video itself stays on your device.

How it works

How do you convert M4V to text?

Drop the M4V on the converter, or choose it. The browser reads the file’s table of tracks, takes the default sound track, decodes it locally and splits it at pauses. Each piece is transcribed in turn, and the text builds up as you watch.

  1. 1

    Add the M4V

Straight from the folder HandBrake saved it to, or from wherever your M4V files live.

  2. 2

    Its speech is written out

Paragraph by paragraph, each with its starting time. Up to 30 minutes of every M4V are transcribed.

  3. 3

    Keep it

Copy the text, or download .txt, .srt, .vtt or .docx files carrying the M4V’s name.

Is an M4V the same as an MP4?

Yes, apart from the name. HandBrake’s guide calls them the exact same file with a different extension, a convention kept for older versions of QuickTime. So an M4V opens here just as an MP4 does, and only its sound is read.

Why does HandBrake save .m4v files?

HandBrake switches an MP4 to the .m4v extension by itself when the video has chapter markers, passed-through Dolby Digital (AC-3) sound or SRT subtitles. You can turn that off in its preferences, but there’s no need for this converter: it opens either.

Which sound track of an M4V gets transcribed?

The default one, which in HandBrake’s Apple presets is the AAC stereo track listed first. The Dolby Digital surround track behind it is ignored. We built an M4V in that layout, with chapters and a subtitle track too, and both browsers read its AAC sound.

When you encode an M4V yourself, keep an AAC track at the top of HandBrake’s audio list, as its Apple presets do. Chrome then reads the file as readily as Safari.

Do chapters and subtitles in an M4V get in the way?

No. Chapter markers and subtitle tracks are passed over, like the picture. The transcript comes from the speech itself, so it doesn’t copy subtitles already in the M4V: it writes fresh ones, timed to the voice, that you can download as SRT or VTT.

How do you transcribe M4V files without limits?

Save the M4V’s AAC sound as an M4A with the audio extractor, which copies it untouched, and import that into NoteOwl. It transcribes MP4 videos and M4A, MP3 or WAV audio on your Mac, unlimited, with on-device AI models, and labels each speaker.

FAQ

Questions about converting M4V to text

Is the M4V to text converter free?

It is. Transcribe up to 3 M4V files a day without an account, and up to 30 minutes of each. Copying the transcript and downloading it as text, subtitles or a Word document cost nothing either.

Is my M4V file uploaded anywhere?

No. The M4V never leaves your device. The browser takes out its sound and sends small pieces of that sound, securely, to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each piece and then discards it. The picture isn’t sent, and NoteOwl saves nothing.

Should I rename an M4V to MP4 first?

There’s no need. The converter opens .m4v files as they are. Renaming one is harmless, though, since HandBrake’s own documentation says the two are the same file under different extensions.

Does it handle HEVC (H.265) M4V files?

Yes. HandBrake’s 4K Apple preset writes H.265 video, and our HEVC test M4V was read in Chrome and in Safari’s engine. The picture is never decoded, so its codec doesn’t matter.

Why does Chrome say my M4V’s sound can’t be decoded?

Its default sound track is in a format Chrome can’t decode, such as Dolby Digital (AC-3) placed ahead of the AAC track. In our test, Safari’s engine read that same M4V. Re-encoding it with the AAC track first fixes it for Chrome too.

What about an M4V film longer than 30 minutes?

Its first 30 minutes are transcribed, and a note above the transcript says the rest was skipped. Split the film into parts to transcribe the rest, or save its sound as an M4A and import it into NoteOwl on a Mac, which transcribes recordings of any length.
