How it works
How do you record a video with your webcam?
Press Turn on camera and allow the camera and microphone. Check the picture and the sound level, choose 720p or 1080p, then press Start recording. Pause whenever you like; press Stop, play it back and download the video.
- 1
Turn on the camera
Allow the camera and microphone. Pick another camera or mic from the lists, or record without sound.
- 2
Record
The timer runs in the corner of the picture. Pause and resume as often as you like: it stays one video.
- 3
Play it back and save
Press Stop, watch it, then download it. The file is named with the date and time.
Will the video be an MP4?
In Chrome, Edge and Safari, yes: they write MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound. Other browsers write WebM. Either way, the file is tidied after you stop, without re-encoding, so players show its length and you can skip through it.

How do you record a webcam video on a Mac?
QuickTime Player records one with File → New Movie Recording, and Photo Booth has a video button. This recorder does the same in any browser, adds pause, and shows the size and length of the file before you save it.
How do you make a webcam video look and sound good?
Light your face from the front, look at the lens rather than your own picture, and use a microphone close to your mouth. Do a ten-second test take and play it back before the real one.
- 1
Look at the lens
Glance at the camera, not your own picture, when you make a point: that’s eye contact for the viewer.
- 2
Light your face
A window or lamp in front of you, never behind. Run the webcam test first if you’re unsure.
- 3
Use a headset mic if you can
A laptop’s built-in mic picks up the room as much as your voice.
- 4
Leave a second at each end
Wait a beat after pressing Start and before pressing Stop, so no words are cut off.
Can you turn a recorded video into text?
Yes, on a Mac. NoteOwl transcribes MP4 videos and audio files on the Mac itself, with the speakers labelled and a summary. To keep a quick spoken thought instead, NoteOwl’s voice notes are free and save your words as text beside the audio.
FAQ
Questions about recording from a webcam
Is the webcam recorder free, with no watermark?
Yes. NoteOwl’s recorder is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Recordings can run up to an hour each, and the video is exactly what your camera recorded.
Why does the preview look mirrored?
The recorder flips the preview like a mirror, so moving to your right moves you right on screen. The recording itself isn’t mirrored: it’s the way the camera sees you. Untick “Mirror the preview” to see that while you record.
Can I record in 1080p?
Choose 1080p before you record. It asks the camera for 1920 × 1080; a camera that can’t do it records the largest picture it offers. The resolution is shown under the finished video.
Can I record video without sound?
Yes. Choose “No sound (video only)” in the microphone list before you record. The camera is then recorded alone.
Does the webcam recorder work on a phone?
Yes, in Safari on an iPhone or iPad and in Chrome on Android. Keep the page open and the screen on while you record: a phone can stop the camera when it locks or you switch apps.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is recorded in your browser and kept in the page’s memory until you download it. Nothing is sent to NoteOwl or anyone else, and closing the page deletes it.
