How it works
How do you convert video to MP3?
Set the MP3 bitrate, then drop the video. The page opens the file, finds its sound track and decodes only that, leaving the frames alone, which is why a 33.4 MB five-minute MP4 became an MP3 in about 3 seconds in Chrome. Listen to the result before you save it.
- 1
Match the bitrate to the video
128 kbps for people talking: lectures, meetings, vlogs, tutorials. 192 kbps, the default, or 320 kbps when the video is mostly music.
- 2
Drop or choose the video
MP4, M4V, MOV, MKV, WebM or 3GP, up to 1 GB and 2 hours. On a phone, pick it from your gallery or the Files app.
- 3
Save the MP3
Play a few seconds, then download it. The MP3 is named after the video, and the video file stays exactly as it was.
How big is the MP3 from a video, and how long does it take?
A small slice of the video, sized by the bitrate alone: 0.96 MB a minute at 128 kbps, 1.44 MB at 192 and 2.4 MB at 320. A five-minute MP4 took about 3 seconds at every bitrate in Chrome, and one-minute MKV, MOV, 3GP and WebM videos 0.6 seconds each.

Which kinds of video can you turn into an MP3?
Six kinds: MP4, M4V, MOV, MKV, WebM and 3GP. In all but WebM the converter reads AAC sound; in WebM it reads Opus or Vorbis. AVI, WMV and FLV can’t be read here, so re-save one of those as MP4 in a video app first.
Some sources have a page set up just for them: MP4 to MP3 for Zoom and Teams recordings, MOV to MP3 for iPhone footage, and WebM to MP3 for recordings made in a browser. This one takes all of them.

Which MP3 bitrate suits what’s in the video?
When you convert video to MP3, think about the sound, not the picture. Speech, such as a lecture, a webinar or a narrated screen recording, is clear at 128 kbps. Music videos and live sets keep more detail at 192 kbps, and 320 kbps is the most an MP3 holds.
No bitrate adds detail the video’s own sound never had. The MP3 also keeps the video’s sample rate, and 48 kHz is the standard for video; untick Keep the original sample rate for 44.1 kHz, the rate of CD audio.

What is left behind when a video becomes an MP3?
The picture, any subtitles and any extra sound tracks: only the video’s main sound track is saved. That sound is decoded and encoded again as MP3, which costs a sliver of detail that is very hard to hear at 192 kbps or above. The video file itself is never modified.
For the sound with nothing re-encoded, or an uncompressed copy for editing, extract audio from video as M4A or WAV instead. For the words rather than the sound, video to text turns the speech in a video into a transcript.
Can a recorded meeting or lecture video become searchable notes?
Yes, on a Mac. NoteOwl imports MP4 videos and MP3 files, so a MOV, MKV or WebM converted here works too. It transcribes each recording with on-device AI models, labels who spoke, writes notes and keeps every transcript searchable, all on the Mac.
For calls still to come, NoteOwl can record and write up the meeting itself, without a bot joining. Dictation into any app is free.
FAQ
Questions about turning a video into an MP3
Does the video get uploaded anywhere?
No. The converter reads the video from your own device and makes the MP3 inside the browser tab; no request leaves the page while it runs. Large phone videos and private recordings stay where they are, and no account is needed.
Can it convert MKV and 3GP files to MP3?
Yes. MKV files from OBS and other recorders, and 3GP files with AAC sound, convert like any MP4. A one-minute MKV and a one-minute 3GP each became a 1.44 MB MP3 at 192 kbps in 0.6 seconds in Chrome.
Why won’t my AVI, WMV or FLV video open?
Those older formats can’t be read by this converter. Open the video in an app that plays it, save or export it as MP4, and then drop the MP4 here to get the MP3.
Why is the MP3 so much smaller than the video?
Because the picture is most of a video file’s size, and the MP3 keeps none of it. A five-minute MP4 of 33.4 MB gave a 4.8 MB MP3 at 128 kbps. An MP3’s size depends only on its bitrate and length, whatever the video’s resolution.
Does the MP3 stay in stereo?
Yes. A stereo video gives a stereo MP3, and a mono one stays mono. Sound with more than two channels, such as 5.1 surround, is mixed down to stereo, because a standard MP3 carries one or two channels.
How long a video can I convert to MP3?
Up to two hours and 1 GB per file. The frames are never decoded, so the time depends mostly on the running length rather than the picture: about 3 seconds for five minutes in Chrome on an Apple M1 Pro.
