How it works
How do you convert an audio file?
Pick the format you want first, and a quality for the compressed ones, then drop the file. This online audio converter works inside the page: your browser decodes the sound and the page writes the new file, which you play back before downloading. The original isn’t changed.
- 1
Choose the format
MP3 to play anywhere, WAV to edit, M4A for Apple devices and apps, OGG for the smallest files.
- 2
Add the file
Any audio file, or a video: only its sound is read. Files up to 1 GB and 2 hours long.
- 3
Download it
Play it back first. The new file keeps your file’s name with the new ending.
Which files can this audio file converter open?
Nearly every audio file people have, and the sound of most videos: MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG, Opus and WebM, plus MP4, MOV, MKV and 3GP. WMA files can’t be opened: neither Chrome nor Safari has a decoder for Windows Media Audio.

Which format should you convert your audio to?
MP3 when it just has to play everywhere, WAV when you’re going to edit it, M4A for Apple’s apps, and OGG when small files matter most. Lossless sources keep the most detail as WAV; the others trade a little detail for size.

Is there a converter page for your exact pair of formats?
Yes. Each page below is this converter set up for one conversion, with what to know about those files. Every one of them can still save any of the four formats.

Does it convert the same in Chrome and Safari?
Almost always: files up to 1 GB and 2 hours, read a piece at a time. Three kinds of file differ. Chrome can’t decode Apple Lossless at all, and Safari reads FLAC and HE-AAC M4A files whole, so it converts those up to 30 minutes long.

FAQ
Questions about converting audio
Is my audio file uploaded anywhere?
No. NoteOwl’s audio converter reads the file from your device, converts it inside your browser and hands the new file straight back. No request leaves the page while it works, so a private recording stays on your computer or phone.
Does converting audio lose quality?
Turning a file into MP3, M4A or OGG re-encodes it, which loses a little detail; at 192 kbps or more that is very hard to hear. WAV loses nothing, but it can’t bring back detail an MP3 or M4A already dropped, so a WAV made from an MP3 sounds the same as the MP3.
What is the largest file it can convert?
Files up to 1 GB and 2 hours long in current Chrome, Edge and Safari. Safari reads Apple Lossless, FLAC and HE-AAC files whole, so in Safari those convert up to 30 minutes long; Chrome takes FLAC and HE-AAC up to 2 hours.
Why can’t it open my WMA file?
Because browsers have no decoder for Windows Media Audio: neither Chrome nor Safari can read a .wma file, so no web page can convert one in the browser. Open it in an app that plays it and save or export it as MP3, M4A or WAV.
Which is better, MP3 or M4A?
At the same bitrate, M4A’s AAC usually sounds slightly better than MP3, and Apple devices prefer it. MP3 plays on more things: older car stereos, MP3 players and upload forms that accept only .mp3. Pick M4A for Apple apps and MP3 for everything else.
Can it convert several files at once?
No. NoteOwl’s audio converter works on one file at a time: drop a file, download the result, then choose the next one. Each conversion takes a few seconds for a 5-minute recording.
Does the audio converter work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in Safari on an iPhone or iPad and in Chrome on Android. Tap Choose file, pick the recording from Files or your photos, and download the converted file when it’s ready.
