How it works

How do you turn a voicemail into text?

Get the voicemail out of your phone or inbox as an audio file, then choose it here. The converter leaves out the silent stretches, transcribes the message and, for a short one, shows the text within seconds. Copy it, or save it as a text or Word file.

  1. 1

    Save the voicemail

Share it from the Phone app to Files, or save the audio attachment from a voicemail email.

  2. 2

    Drop it here

Your browser reads the file and sends it in short pieces. Any message up to 30 minutes long is transcribed in full.

  3. 3

    Act on it

Copy out the callback number, the name and the request, or keep the whole message as text.

How do you save a voicemail from an iPhone?

Open the Phone app and find the message: under Calls, filtered to Voicemails, or on the Voicemail tab if you use the classic layout. Tap it, tap the Share button, then choose Save to Files or send it to your computer.

The iPhone shows its own transcript in the lower half of the screen when you open a message. Transcribe the file here when that transcript is missing or garbled, or when you want the message as a document.

How do you save a voicemail on an Android phone?

In the Phone by Google app, tap Voicemail at the bottom, expand the message, tap Send to and choose where the audio should go, such as email or Drive. Other phone brands and carrier voicemail apps have share options of their own.

That voicemail list needs visual voicemail, which depends on your carrier. Google’s built-in voicemail transcripts come only in English and Spanish, with some carriers, so a message in any other language is a good reason to transcribe the file here.

Can you transcribe voicemail from an office phone system?

Yes, whenever it reaches you as an audio file. Microsoft Teams, for one, delivers each voicemail as an email with the recording attached, and many office phone systems work the same way. Save the attachment, then drop it on the converter.

Why do voicemails transcribe less cleanly than other recordings?

A phone line carries a narrower slice of the voice than a microphone does, and callers ring from cars, streets and shops. Mistakes cluster in the hurried sign-off with a name and a number, which is exactly the part you need most.

  • Numbers as digits

Spoken numbers usually come out as digits, ready to dial. Replay the last few seconds anyway and check every digit of a callback number.

  • Names spelled by ear

A caller’s name, company or street is written the way it sounds. If they spelled it out, listen to that part again.

  • Silence is left out

The pause before the caller speaks and the dead air after they hang up aren’t sent, so they can’t turn into stray words.

  • Speakerphone and wind

A message left on speaker or outdoors is the hardest to read back. Play any line that doesn’t make sense.

FAQ

Questions about voicemail transcription

Is this voicemail transcription free?

Yes, and there’s nothing to sign up for. Transcribe 3 voicemails a day, each up to 30 minutes long, which covers almost any message a caller can leave.

Doesn’t my phone already transcribe voicemail?

Sometimes. The iPhone shows a transcript when you open a message, and Phone by Google offers one in English and Spanish with some carriers. Use this page when there’s no transcript, the caller spoke another language, or you want the text as a file.

Can it transcribe a voicemail in another language?

Yes. It works out the language from the caller’s voice, so a message in French, Hindi or Portuguese comes back in that language, with the language named beside the transcript.

Does it show the caller’s phone number?

Only if the caller said it aloud. The converter writes what was spoken in the message; the number they called from is in your phone’s call list, not in the audio.

What happens to the voicemail file?

It never leaves your device whole. Your browser sends short pieces of its sound to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards them, and NoteOwl keeps no copy of the voicemail or its text.

Can I transcribe several voicemails at once?

One at a time, up to 3 a day. Drop the first, copy its text, then press Transcribe another file for the next. NoteOwl on a Mac has no daily limit.
