How it works
How do you convert WebM to text?
Pick the WebM or drop it on the converter. It reads the file in your browser, sets any video aside, cuts the sound into short pieces at pauses and sends them for AI transcription. The transcript appears as the pieces come back.
- 1
Add the WebM
A recording a web app made in Chrome or Edge, a browser screen recording, or a web video saved as WebM.
- 2
Watch it fill in
Paragraphs arrive with their start times. Up to 30 minutes of each WebM are transcribed.
- 3
Take the transcript
Copy it, or download a text file, subtitles or a Word document named after the recording.
What is a WebM file?
WebM is an open media format Google introduced in 2010 for video on the web. A WebM can hold video, sound or both, and the sound is Opus or Vorbis. Chrome and Edge record to WebM unless the web page asks for another format.
- Web apps recording a microphone in Chrome or Edge
- What’s insideOpus sound, no video
- Screen recorders that run in the browser
- What’s insideVP8 or VP9 video with Opus sound
- Web video saved from a site
- What’s insideVP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis sound
| Made by | What’s inside |
|---|---|
| Web apps recording a microphone in Chrome or Edge | Opus sound, no video |
| Screen recorders that run in the browser | VP8 or VP9 video with Opus sound |
| Web video saved from a site | VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis sound |
Why does a browser recording have no length?
Chrome and Edge write a WebM while they record and never go back to note the final duration in the file, so some players show no length or can’t skip ahead. The converter measures the recording by reading through it, so the times in the transcript are right.
A minute of Chrome’s default recording took about 1 MB in our test. Whatever quality a WebM was recorded at, the converter brings its sound down to 16 kHz mono before transcription.
Can you transcribe a WebM video?
Yes. The converter uses only the sound track and leaves the picture alone, so a screen recording with narration or a call recorded in the browser works like an audio file. The video’s resolution makes no difference to the transcript.
A screen recording made without a microphone has no sound track at all; the converter says so rather than returning an empty transcript.
Does WebM work in Safari?
In our tests, yes. WebM files with Opus or Vorbis sound, with and without video, decoded in Safari 26 on a Mac as they did in Chrome and Edge. The converter unpacks the WebM itself; the browser only has to decode the sound.
How do you record calls on a Mac without a browser recorder?
With NoteOwl. It records meetings on your Mac with no bot in the call, transcribes them there with unlimited transcription and labels each speaker. For a quick recording of your own voice, the free online voice recorder saves MP3 or WAV.
FAQ
Questions about WebM to text
Is the WebM to text converter free?
Yes, with no account. Transcribe 3 WebM files a day, up to 30 minutes of each, and keep the result as text, subtitles or a Word document.
Does the converter keep my WebM recording?
No. The file is read on your device, and only short pieces of its sound travel, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each one and discards it. NoteOwl stores no audio, no video and no text.
Does it say who is speaking in a recorded call?
No. The transcript is one stream of paragraphs with times, without speaker names. Listening to the first minute and adding names where each person starts is usually quick; NoteOwl on a Mac labels speakers for you.
Can it read a WebM with Vorbis sound?
Yes. Older WebM files often use Vorbis rather than Opus. Either one is decoded and turned into 16 kHz mono before transcription, so both give the same kind of result.
Can I turn a WebM into an MP3 instead?
Yes, with NoteOwl’s free extract audio tool, which saves the sound of a WebM as MP3 or WAV in your browser. For a transcript you can skip that step: this converter reads the WebM directly.
What if the WebM is longer than 30 minutes?
The converter transcribes its first 30 minutes and shows a note saying so. To transcribe the rest, cut the recording into shorter parts first.
