This WebM translator gives a WebM video subtitles in another language: a screen recording made in the browser, a recorded web call or a saved web video is transcribed from its sound, translated, and timed as SRT or VTT subtitles.

How it works

How do you translate a WebM video?

Drop the WebM here and choose the language for the subtitles. The page sets the picture aside, measures the recording by reading through it, and sends its sound in short pieces to be transcribed; the transcript is then translated and timed as subtitles.

  1. 1

    Add the WebM

A browser screen recording, a call recorded by a web app, or a web video saved as WebM.

  2. 2

    Choose the language

English to start with, or any language in the list. Up to 30 minutes of each recording.

  3. 3

    Download VTT or SRT

VTT for a web page’s video player, SRT for YouTube and video editors.

Can you translate a screen recording made in the browser?

Yes, as long as it recorded a microphone. Screen recorders that run in the browser save WebM with VP8 or VP9 picture and Opus sound; the page uses the sound and ignores the picture. A recording made without a microphone has no sound track, and the page tells you so.

How do you show translated subtitles on your own web page?

Use the VTT download with the video element’s track tag. Set kind to subtitles, srclang to the language code and label to the name viewers see in the player’s menu; the browser’s own player then offers the translation.

  1. 1

    Save the VTT

Download it, for example demo.es.vtt, and put it on your site next to the video.

  2. 2

    Add a track

    Inside the video element: <track kind="subtitles" src="demo.es.vtt" srclang="es" label="Español">.

  3. 3

    Mind other domains

A VTT served from another domain needs the crossorigin attribute on the video element.

Will subtitles line up if the WebM shows no length?

Yes. Browser recordings often leave the duration out of the file, so players show none. The page measures the recording by reading through it, 7.86 seconds for an 8-second test, and times every subtitle from the sound itself.

Can you subtitle a recorded web call in another language?

Yes. A call recorded by a web app in Chrome or Edge is usually a WebM with Opus sound. Translate it here for subtitles to watch it by, or keep the translated text: the TXT download holds every subtitle in order, without speaker names.

Want calls recorded and transcribed on your Mac instead?

NoteOwl records meetings on your Mac with no bot in the call, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. For a WebM’s transcript in its own language, use WebM to text.

FAQ

Questions about translating WebM videos

Is the WebM translator free?

Yes, and there’s no account. Translate 3 WebM recordings a day, up to 30 minutes of each, with SRT, VTT and text downloads.

Is my WebM recording uploaded?

No. It’s read on your device and only short pieces of its sound are sent, to a cloud AI transcription service, followed by the transcript’s text, to a cloud AI translation service. Each discards what it gets; the picture never leaves, and NoteOwl stores nothing.

Which browsers can translate a WebM?

Chrome, Edge and Safari. The page unpacks the WebM itself and only asks the browser to decode the sound, and WebM with Opus sound read in Chrome and in Safari’s engine in our tests.

Which subtitle file should I download?

VTT if the video plays on a web page or a course platform; SRT for YouTube, video editors and desktop players. Both hold the same subtitles at the same times.

What if the recording is longer than 30 minutes?

You get subtitles for its first 30 minutes, and the page notes where it stopped. Split a longer recording and translate the parts separately.

Does it change the WebM?

No. Nothing is written into the video: the subtitles are separate files that you add wherever the video plays.
