M4A translator
This M4A translator takes an M4A recording, such as an iPhone voice memo or the audio file Zoom saves, writes down what was said and translates it, so the recording becomes text in your language with a time on every paragraph.

How it works
How do you translate an M4A recording?
Choose the M4A and the language to read it in, and the page does the rest: it opens the AAC sound in your browser, has it transcribed a short piece at a time, then translates the transcript in batches. Each translated paragraph keeps the moment it was said.
- 1
Add the M4A
A voice memo saved to Files, the audio-only file Zoom leaves next to a meeting’s video, or an Android recording.
- 2
Set the languages
Spoken in can stay on Detect automatically; Translate into starts on English. Up to 30 minutes of each file.
- 3
Keep the translation
Copy it, or save TXT or Word under the memo’s own name with the language code added.
Which M4A files can be translated here?
Any M4A with AAC sound, which is nearly all of them, in Chrome, Edge or Safari. The exception is Apple Lossless: a voice memo recorded on the Lossless setting opens only in Safari, and other browsers tell you so rather than failing without a word.
Opening the file is the quick part: in our test, a one-minute AAC M4A was decoded and ready to cut into pieces in 0.2 seconds in Chrome and 0.4 in Safari.

Can you translate a voice memo on the iPhone itself?
Yes. Save the memo to Files from its Share menu, open this page in Safari on the phone, tap Choose file and pick it. Keep the page in front until the translation appears, because a phone may pause a page left in the background.
- 1
Share the memo
In Voice Memos, tap the recording’s ⋯ button and choose Share.
- 2
Save it to Files
Pick Save to Files and a folder. The memo is kept there as an .m4a file.
- 3
Translate it here
Tap Choose file on this page, open that folder and select the memo.
How do you translate the sound of a Zoom call?
Use the M4A Zoom writes when it records to your computer: it sits in the meeting’s folder beside the video, holding the same sound in a much smaller file. If everyone spoke one language, set it under Spoken in before you drop the file.
The translation has no speaker names, so the first minute is worth a listen to note who starts where. A call in a language you know only a little is easier to follow with the Original view open beside it.
What is a translated voice memo good for?
Reading what you can’t follow by ear: a relative’s memo in their language, a lecture recorded on a trip abroad, an interview for a project. The original transcript sits behind the Original switch, so a name or a figure can be checked against what was said.
Into Hindi or Tamil, a memo spoken in a language other than English is translated into English first and then on into Hindi or Tamil; an English memo goes straight in.
Recording on an iPhone and a Mac every week?
NoteOwl transcribes M4A recordings on your Mac, lossless voice memos included, with unlimited transcription, and labels each speaker. For a memo’s text in its own language, use voice memo to text or M4A to text.
FAQ
Questions about translating M4A recordings
Is the M4A translator free?
It is, and you don’t need an account. Each day you can translate 3 M4A recordings, the first 30 minutes of each, and download every result.
Should I make an MP3 from the M4A first?
No. The page opens the M4A just as your phone or computer saved it; an MP3 copy would only compress the sound a second time.
Where does my M4A go?
Nowhere as a file. The browser decodes it on your device and passes short stretches of its sound to a cloud AI transcription service, then the transcript’s text to a cloud AI translation service. Both discard what they receive, and NoteOwl stores nothing.
Can it translate a long lecture recorded on an iPhone?
The first 30 minutes of it, with a note above the translation saying where it stopped. Cut a longer recording into parts and translate each one.
Which languages can a voice memo be translated into?
English, which is chosen to start with, or any language in the Translate into list, from Spanish and German to Japanese and Tamil. The spoken language is detected from the memo, or you can set it yourself.
Does it work for an Android recording?
Yes. Android recorder apps that save M4A almost always use AAC sound, which every major browser decodes. Copy the file to your computer, or pick it on the phone from the recorder’s folder.
