How it works
How do you summarize a podcast episode?
Upload the episode’s audio file and the summarizer transcribes it in short pieces, then writes the summary from the transcript. If the show publishes transcripts, paste one instead: it skips the transcribing and can cover a longer episode.
- 1
Add the episode
An MP3 or M4A from your own recordings or the show’s feed (the first 30 minutes), or a pasted transcript of up to about an hour.
- 2
Choose the length
Short for the episode in a few lines; detailed for every topic, with more moments to jump to.
- 3
Use it
Copy the summary into your notes or a newsletter, or download it as Word, Markdown or text.
What does a podcast summary include?
The episode in brief, every topic in the order it came up, up to three quotes in the speakers’ own words, and the times where the segments begin. Listeners use it to choose episodes; hosts use it to start show notes.
- Episode overview
- What it holdsWhat the episode is about and where it lands
- Topics discussed
- What it holdsEach subject in the order it came up, with what was said about it
- Quotes
- What it holdsUp to three lines kept only if they appear word for word in the transcript
- Key moments
- What it holdsThe times where segments begin, from the transcript’s own timestamps
| Part | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Episode overview | What the episode is about and where it lands |
| Topics discussed | Each subject in the order it came up, with what was said about it |
| Quotes | Up to three lines kept only if they appear word for word in the transcript |
| Key moments | The times where segments begin, from the transcript’s own timestamps |
Can you turn a podcast summary into show notes?
Yes, with a little editing. The overview becomes the episode description, the key moments become timestamps, and a quote gives you a line to share. Rewrite it in the show’s voice before you publish.
- 1
Start from the overview
Edit it into your episode description, in your own voice.
- 2
Keep the key moments
Times like 12:40 in your show notes help listeners find the segment they want.
- 3
Pick a quote for social posts
Each quote is the guest’s exact words from the transcript, ready to share.
For a layout to fill in, see the show notes template; for the episode’s full text, the podcast transcript tool.
What happens to the episode you upload?
Your browser decodes it, cuts the sound into short pieces and sends them to be transcribed, then sends the transcript to an AI service to be summarized. NoteOwl stores neither the audio nor the text, and nothing is published.
Can a Mac write show notes from your own recordings?
Yes. NoteOwl imports an episode, transcribes it on your Mac with each speaker labelled, and its Podcast Show Notes template writes the overview, the topics, notable quotes and the resources mentioned, with on-device AI models. See NoteOwl for podcasters.
FAQ
Questions about summarizing podcasts
Is the podcast summarizer free?
Yes, with no account: 3 uploaded episodes a day, up to 30 minutes of each, and 5 summaries a day including pasted transcripts. Every download is included.
Are the quotes real?
Yes. A quote is kept only if the same words appear in the transcript: the server compares each one with it before you see the summary, and drops any that don’t match.
Can it summarize a whole long episode?
An uploaded episode is summarized from its first 30 minutes. With the episode’s transcript, about an hour fits in one summary; for a longer show, summarize the transcript in parts.
Does it tell the host and guest apart?
Not from an upload: the transcript it makes has no speaker names. A pasted transcript that names its speakers keeps them, so the summary can say who said what.
Is the episode stored anywhere?
No. The browser sends short pieces of the sound to be transcribed and the transcript to be summarized, and NoteOwl stores none of it. The summary exists only in the open page.
Can I summarize a podcast in another language?
Yes. The spoken language is detected, and the summary, topics and quotes come back in the episode’s own language.
