Video summarizer

This video summarizer turns a video into a short summary: upload the file, and the sound is transcribed and summarized into an overview, the key points in order and the key moments with their times. Pick a short, medium or detailed summary, then copy it or save it as text, Word or Markdown.

How it works

How do you summarize a video?

Choose the video, and the summarizer takes its sound track, transcribes it in short pieces, then writes the summary from the transcript. You see the transcript arrive first, then the summary above it, with the moment each key point starts.

  1. 1

    Choose the video

An MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM or MKV file from your computer or phone. The first 30 minutes of each video are summarized.

  2. 2

    Pick a length

Short gives a sentence or two and a handful of points; detailed gives a full paragraph, up to a dozen points and more moments.

  3. 3

    Copy or save it

Copy the summary, or download it as a text file, a Word document or Markdown. The full transcript is there to save too.

Which videos can it summarize?

Any video file with speech in it: MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV, from a computer or a phone. Recordings of talks, calls and lessons work best, because what was said carries the content. Music videos and footage with little talking leave little to summarize.

Webinars and recorded talks
What you getThe talk’s argument and its main sections, with the time each one starts
Zoom, Teams and Meet recordings
What you getWhat was covered on the call, from the MP4 the app saved
Screen recordings and Loom videos
What you getA walkthrough or demo, as the steps it went through
Course and training videos
What you getThe lesson’s points, to review without rewatching
Phone videos
What you getA speech, a toast or an interview filmed on an iPhone (MOV) or Android phone (MP4)

What does a video summary include?

An overview, the key points in the order the video makes them, and the key moments with the time each one starts. The transcript the summary was written from comes with it.

Summary
What it holdsWhat the video is about and its main point, in one to six sentences
Key points
What it holdsThree to twelve points, in the order the video makes them
Key moments
What it holdsThe times where the main parts begin, taken from the transcript, so you can jump straight there
Transcript
What it holdsEvery word, with times, to copy or save as TXT, SRT, VTT or Word

What happens to the video you upload?

Its picture stays on your device. The browser reads only the sound, sends it in short pieces to be transcribed, then sends the transcript to an AI service to be summarized. NoteOwl stores none of it: close the page and the summary is gone.

Each visitor gets 3 uploaded videos and 5 summaries a day. For a transcript without a summary, use the video to text converter; for a video on YouTube, the YouTube summarizer works from the transcript YouTube shows under it.

Can your recorded meetings be summarized without uploading them?

Yes, on a Mac. NoteOwl records calls without a bot joining, then writes the summary, the decisions and the action items on your Mac with on-device AI models, unlimited. Recordings you import get the same treatment. See NoteOwl’s meeting summaries.

FAQ

Questions about summarizing videos

Is this video summarizer free?

Yes. NoteOwl’s video summarizer summarizes 3 uploaded videos a day, up to 30 minutes of each, with no account. Pasted transcripts count toward 5 summaries a day. Every download is included.

Is my video uploaded?

The picture never leaves your device. Your browser takes the sound, sends it in short pieces to be transcribed, then sends the transcript to a cloud AI service to be summarized. NoteOwl stores none of it: the summary exists only in the open page.

Can it summarize a YouTube video?

Use NoteOwl’s YouTube video summarizer for that: copy the transcript YouTube shows under the video and paste it in. It never asks for a link and never contacts YouTube. This page is for video files you have on your device.

What if my video is longer than the limit?

The summarizer transcribes the first 30 minutes and summarizes those, and says so. If you have the video’s full transcript or subtitle file, paste that instead: a pasted transcript can run to about an hour.

Does the summary make things up?

It is told to use only what the transcript says, and the server checks the summary against the transcript before you see it. A line with a figure the video never gave is left out, and each key moment must be a time that is in the transcript.

Which languages does it work in?

The language is detected from the speech, and the summary is written in the language the video is in, from English and Spanish to Hindi and Japanese.
