Remove audio from video
To remove audio from video, drop the file here and press Remove audio. The page writes a new file of the same kind with the picture copied frame for frame and no sound track at all, so the quality doesn’t change and it takes a second or two.

How it works
How do you mute a video?
Add the video and press Remove audio. The tool reads the file’s picture track and writes it into a new file of the same format, leaving the sound out. Nothing is decoded or encoded, so the frames are exactly the ones you started with.
- 1
Add the video
From your phone, a screen recording, an editor’s export: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV.
- 2
Remove audio
Seconds, even for an hour-long video; there’s nothing to set.
- 3
Download the silent copy
It has the original’s name with “-muted” added, and the original is left as it was.
Is a muted video the same as one with the volume at zero?
No. Turning the volume down in a player only silences it on your screen; the sound is still in the file for anyone else. Removing the audio takes the sound track out of the file, so there is nothing left to turn up.
Some editors “mute” by writing a track of silence instead. This tool removes the track, which also makes the file a little smaller: our 30-second 720p MP4 lost the 0.5 MB its sound took.
Why remove the sound from a video?
Usually because the picture is what you want to share, and the sound is noise, music you can’t use, or a conversation that wasn’t meant for others. A silent copy is also what most editors and social apps want when you add your own music or voice-over.
Background noise
Wind, traffic, a fan or a room full of chatter under a clip that makes its point without words.
Music you can’t post
A song playing in the background can get a post muted or blocked; remove it before you add your own.
Private talk
A screen recording or a phone video where someone said something that shouldn’t travel with it.
Does removing the audio change the picture?
Not at all. The picture is copied packet by packet into the new file, with its resolution, frame rate and rotation, and nothing is decoded. That’s why it takes seconds and why the new file is exactly as sharp as the old one.
What if you need the words but not the recording?
Then keep a transcript instead. NoteOwl records meetings on your Mac without a bot and transcribes them with each speaker named; the words stay on your Mac, searchable, whatever you do with the video.
To keep only the sound of a video instead, use the audio extractor.
FAQ
Questions about removing audio from video
Is my video uploaded?
No. The file is read from your device and the silent copy is written in the page. In our tests no network request left the browser between choosing the video and downloading the result.
Can I remove only part of the sound, like one voice or the music?
Not with this tool: it removes the whole sound track. Separating a voice from music needs an audio editor or a separation tool; you can then put the cleaned sound back in a video editor.
Can I mute just part of a video?
No, the whole video becomes silent. To keep sound in one part, trim the video into pieces with the video trimmer, mute the piece you want silent, and join them in a video editor.
What format is the muted video?
The same as the original: an MP4 stays an MP4 and a MOV a MOV, with the same video inside. An MPEG-TS file from a camcorder comes back as an MP4.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Choose the video from your photos or files, press Remove audio and download the silent copy. It’s quick on a phone too, because nothing is re-encoded.
My video has no sound. What happens?
The tool tells you it’s already silent and doesn’t make a copy. Screen recordings made without a microphone often have no sound track at all.
