How it works

How do you change an OGG file into an MP3?

With MP3 selected, drop the .ogg on the converter. The page unpacks the Ogg file, your browser decodes the Opus or Vorbis sound inside, and an MP3 encoder built into the page writes it at your bitrate. A five-minute voice message took 2.4 seconds in Chrome.

  1. 1

    Choose the bitrate

128 kbps for a voice message or other speech. 192 or 320 kbps for a Vorbis music track you want to keep at its best.

  2. 2

    Add the .ogg

Saved from WhatsApp Web, Telegram Desktop, a game’s folder or a music download. Files ending .oga open as well.

  3. 3

    Download the MP3

Hear it in the page first. It takes the OGG file’s name, with .mp3 at the end instead.

How big is the MP3 made from an OGG voice message?

Much bigger than the OGG, because MP3 needs far more bits than Opus to carry a voice. A five-minute mono voice note of 0.68 MB became a 4.8 MB MP3 at 128 kbps, seven times its size, and 7.2 MB at 192. The extra size adds no detail.

Where do OGG files usually come from?

Mostly from chat apps and games. WhatsApp Web and Telegram Desktop save voice messages as .ogg files with Opus sound, while game folders, mods and open-source music sites tend to hold Vorbis. The converter reads both, and checks what is inside rather than trusting the ending.

Why won’t some players and apps open an OGG?

Because Ogg support was never built into many of them. Many car stereos and older music players, several video editors and plenty of upload forms take MP3 but refuse .ogg. Converting gives them the same sound in the format they expect.

Voice messages are the usual case: a clip saved from a chat has to go into an email, a slide deck or an edit, and the program on the other end wants MP3. The OGG itself stays untouched on your device, so you lose nothing by keeping both.

Which bitrate suits a voice message, and which suits music?

128 kbps for a voice message or any other speech: about 0.96 MB a minute. For Vorbis music, take 192 kbps, the default, or 320 kbps, the most MP3 allows, at 2.4 MB a minute. No setting brings back detail the OGG never held.

Can NoteOwl transcribe a voice message saved as OGG?

Yes. Save it as an MP3 here and drop the MP3 on NoteOwl on your Mac: it transcribes it with on-device AI models, labels each speaker and keeps the text searchable with your meetings.

Need only a quick transcript in the browser? OGG to text reads the .ogg as it is. NoteOwl’s own voice notes and dictation into any app are free.

FAQ

What people ask about OGG to MP3

Is the OGG file uploaded while it converts?

No. Your browser opens the OGG from your own storage, decodes it and builds the MP3 inside the page. Nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-in is involved.

Can it convert a WhatsApp voice message?

Yes. Download the voice message from WhatsApp Web and you get an .ogg file with Opus sound. Drop it on the converter, keep 128 kbps, and a five-minute message comes out as a 4.8 MB MP3.

Does it work on Ogg Vorbis as well as Opus?

Yes. The converter reads which codec the Ogg file holds, so a Vorbis track from a game or a music site converts just like an Opus voice message. A one-minute stereo Vorbis file took 0.65 seconds in Chrome.

Why is my MP3 so much bigger than the OGG was?

Opus squeezes speech into very few bits, and MP3 needs many more for the same sound. A 0.68 MB voice note of five minutes becomes 4.8 MB at 128 kbps and 7.2 MB at 192 kbps, without sounding any better than the original.

What sample rate will the MP3 have?

An Opus voice message decodes at 48 kHz, so its MP3 is 48 kHz while Keep the original sample rate is ticked, and 44.1 kHz when it isn’t. A Vorbis file keeps its own rate.

My file ends in .opus, not .ogg. Will it convert?

Yes. An .opus file is an Ogg file with Opus sound, and the converter identifies files by what is inside them, so .ogg, .oga and .opus endings all convert the same way.

How long an OGG recording can it handle?

Up to 2 hours or 1 GB per file. A two-hour recording saved as a 128 kbps MP3 comes to about 115 MB, so a computer is a better place for it than a phone.
