How it works

How do you convert OGG to text?

Pick the OGG file or drop it on the box. The page unpacks the Ogg file itself, hands the Vorbis or Opus sound to your browser’s decoder, and sends short pieces, cut at pauses, for AI transcription. Text appears as they come back.

  1. 1

    Choose the OGG

A voice message saved from Telegram or WhatsApp Web, a sound file from Wikimedia Commons, or an audio editor’s export. Files ending .oga work too.

  2. 2

    Let it transcribe

Paragraphs appear with their start times. Each OGG is transcribed up to its first 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Copy or download

Copy the transcript, or save TXT, SRT, VTT or Word files named after the recording.

What is an OGG file?

OGG is an open container format from the Xiph.Org Foundation. The sound inside is usually Vorbis, common in older music and game audio, or Opus, which chat apps use for voice messages. The converter reads both kinds.

Does an OGG file work in Safari?

Here, yes. The converter unpacks the Ogg file with its own code and asks the browser only to decode the sound inside. In our tests, OGG files with Vorbis and with Opus sound decoded in Safari 26 on a Mac, just as they did in Chrome and Edge.

How do you save an OGG from Telegram or WhatsApp Web?

Download the message on a computer. Telegram Desktop and WhatsApp Web both let you save a voice message from its menu, and both give you an .ogg file with Opus sound. Drop that file here, or choose it from your Downloads folder.

  1. 1

Open the chat on a computer

Use Telegram Desktop, or WhatsApp Web in your browser.

  2. 2

    Save the voice message

Open the message’s menu and choose the option to save or download it. It lands in Downloads as an .ogg file.

  3. 3

    Transcribe it

Drag the .ogg onto the converter above. The words come back with the time each paragraph starts.

What’s the difference between .ogg, .oga and .opus?

Only the name. All three are Ogg files: .oga says the file holds sound only, and .opus says that sound is Opus. The converter checks what’s actually inside rather than trusting the extension, so a file with the wrong ending still opens.

Can NoteOwl transcribe OGG files on a Mac?

Yes. NoteOwl imports OGG recordings and transcribes them on your Mac with unlimited transcription and on-device AI models, labels each speaker, and keeps them searchable with your meetings and voice notes. Nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

Questions about converting OGG to text

Is the OGG to text converter free?

Yes, with no account needed. You can transcribe 3 OGG files a day, the first 30 minutes of each, and copy the text or download it in any format offered.

Can it transcribe a Telegram voice message?

Yes. Telegram keeps voice messages as .ogg files with Opus sound. Save the message from Telegram Desktop, drop the file on the converter, and the transcript comes back with the time of each paragraph.

Does it matter whether my OGG holds Vorbis or Opus?

No. Both decode in the browser, and both are brought down to 16 kHz mono before transcription, so the result depends on the recording itself, not on which of the two sounds is inside.

Is my OGG file uploaded or stored?

Neither. The browser decodes the OGG on your device and passes short pieces of the sound, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service that transcribes each one and discards it. NoteOwl saves no audio and no text.

Why won’t my OGG file open?

Use a current version of Chrome, Edge or Safari: older browsers can lack the decoder the sound needs. If it still fails, the file may be damaged or only partly downloaded; save it from the chat again.

How long can an OGG recording be?

Any length, but only its first 30 minutes are transcribed, and the page tells you when it stops early. NoteOwl on a Mac transcribes OGG recordings of any length.
