German subtitle generator

This German subtitle generator writes Untertitel for a video spoken in German: umlauts and ß in place, long compounds never broken in two, each subtitle timed to the speaker and ready to save as SRT or VTT.

How it works

How do you create German subtitles for a video?

Drag the video onto the page. Its soundtrack is transcribed as German in short sections, and the words are arranged into timed subtitles of one or two lines. Check them in the preview, then save the subtitle file you need.

  1. 1

    Add the video

A YouTube video, a recorded Vortrag, a Schulung or a short clip: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM or just the audio.

  2. 2

    German, subtitle by subtitle

The cues appear as the speech is written, each with its start and end time. Up to 30 minutes of every video are covered.

  3. 3

    Choose the format

SRT for YouTube, Vimeo or DaVinci Resolve; VTT for an HTML5 player.

Why fix the subtitles to German?

A language that is guessed can drift on a quiet or accented passage, and the result is a cue in the wrong language under German speech. Fixed to German, every subtitle is written in German, start to finish.

Where speakers change language for long passages, German and English in a conference talk say, use the main subtitle generator instead: it decides the language of each passage itself.

What happens to long German compound words in subtitles?

They stay in one piece. A line breaks only between words, so a 24-letter “Unabhängigkeitserklärung” simply takes most of a line, and a hyphenated “Unterwasser-Topologie” stays whole. Each line still holds at most 42 characters.

German words in our test averaged almost six letters, more than in Italian or Spanish, so a German line holds fewer words; lines still averaged about 31 characters.

A 24-letter word
The subtitle’s linesdass auf der Rückseite / der Unabhängigkeitserklärung
A 21-letter word
The subtitle’s linesund die Kohlenstoffemissionen / zu reduzieren.
A large number
The subtitle’s linesKönigstiger und etwa 30.000 / gefleckte Hirsche auf.

What should you check in German subtitles?

Abbreviations with full stops, such as “v. Chr.” and “z. B.”. The generator keeps an abbreviation inside its sentence, so in our test “Im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. von den Ägyptern” stayed on one line.

Join such a pair in a text editor, or leave it if the timing reads well. Ordinal dates came through fine: “Am 15. August 1940 fielen die / Alliierten in Südfrankreich ein.”

How do professional German subtitles mark two speakers and numbers?

With a hyphen and no space before each speaker’s line, “-Tut mir leid, dass ich zu spät bin.” over “-Schon gut.”, in Netflix’s German style guide. The generator adds no such marks; it writes the spoken words only.

The same guide writes one to twelve in words, puts a space before % (“14 %”, where our test wrote “20%”) and a full stop in five-digit figures such as “30.000”. Its line and speed limits match this page: 42 characters and 17 a second.

Need German subtitles that show who is speaking?

NoteOwl understands German on your Mac: it transcribes German recordings there with unlimited transcription, recognises who is speaking and saves SRT subtitles that start with each name. For a transcript instead of subtitles, use German audio to text.

FAQ

German subtitles, answered

Is the German subtitle generator free?

Yes. It subtitles 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and no watermark, and every format can be downloaded.

Can it turn an English video into German subtitles?

No. It writes the German that is spoken and doesn’t translate. Make subtitles in the video’s own language first, then translate the text of each SRT block and keep the numbers and times unchanged.

Does it hyphenate long words to fit a line?

No. A word is never broken across two lines, which is also what professional German subtitles do unless a word already contains a hyphen. A very long compound simply gets a line of its own.

Which encoding keeps ä, ö, ü and ß intact?

UTF-8, which is how the SRT and VTT files are saved. If you correct a word in a text editor, save it as UTF-8 again so the umlauts don’t turn into odd symbols in your video editor.

Does my video get uploaded?

The video itself stays on your computer or phone. Short pieces of its sound are sent over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes them and throws them away; the subtitles are assembled in your browser and NoteOwl saves nothing.
