How it works

How do you add Dutch subtitles to a video?

Drop the video here. Its sound is split into short pieces that are transcribed in Dutch, and the words become numbered subtitles timed to when they are spoken. Read them in the preview, then download the SRT or VTT file.

Why fix the subtitles to Dutch?

Because a guessed language can wander on a mumbled stretch, Dutch being close to German and Afrikaans, and one cue in the wrong language stands out to viewers who read every line. Fixed to Dutch, every subtitle is spelled in Dutch, Flemish speakers included.

A video in which people switch between Dutch and English for long stretches works better on the main subtitle generator, which identifies each stretch’s language.

Do long Dutch words fit on a subtitle line?

Yes. Compounds stay whole, since lines break only between words: “weersverschijnselen” (19 letters) and “werelderfgoederen” both sat unbroken on a second line in our test. Lines averaged about 30 characters, well inside the 42 allowed.

The trema and accents came through too: “officiële”, “efficiënte”, “geëmigreerde” and the stressed “één”.

How fast should Dutch subtitles be?

No faster than about 17 characters a second, the generator’s own setting. Netflix’s Dutch style guide calls that an upper limit and asks for lower speeds where possible, which in translated subtitles means condensing what was said.

The generator writes down everything that is said, so a fast speaker can outrun the reading speed. Trimming a repeated word or a side remark in the SRT makes those subtitles easier to follow; the times stay as they are.

Are Dutch viewers used to reading subtitles?

Yes. In the Netherlands and Flanders, as across north-west Europe, films and series for teenagers and adults are subtitled rather than dubbed; usually only children’s programmes get a Dutch soundtrack.

House style follows that habit. Netflix’s Dutch guide drops exclamation marks and semicolons (our test had none of either), uses single quotation marks for quotes, and marks a second speaker with a hyphen and no space. The generator adds no speaker hyphens.

Making Dutch subtitles with speaker names on a Mac?

NoteOwl understands Dutch on your Mac: it transcribes Dutch recordings there with unlimited transcription, works out who said what and saves SRT subtitles with every speaker’s name. To get a readable Dutch transcript instead, use Dutch audio to text.

FAQ

Questions about Dutch ondertitels

Is the Dutch subtitle generator free?

Yes. Make Dutch subtitles for 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes each, without an account or watermark, and download SRT, VTT or text.

Does it work for Flemish?

Yes, Flemish speech is written as Dutch, in standard Dutch spelling, because the page is set to the Dutch language. Our test recording was Dutch from the Netherlands, so try a short Flemish clip first if the accent is strong.

Can it make Dutch subtitles for an English video?

No. It writes down the Dutch that is spoken and doesn’t translate. Subtitle the English video in English first, then translate each subtitle’s text and keep its number and times.

Can I edit the subtitles afterwards?

Yes. An SRT or VTT file is plain text: open it in any text editor, change a word or shorten a line, and save it as UTF-8 so the ë and é survive. Leave the timing lines untouched.

Does NoteOwl keep my video?

No. Your browser reads the video on your own device. Short pieces of the sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards them, and the subtitles are built in the page.
