How do you translate English subtitles into Tamil?
Drop the SRT or VTT on the page. A plainly English file is recognised and Tamil is already chosen, so press Translate. The subtitle text is translated in batches, and every Tamil line is put back at the times of the English one. Then download.

Can German or French subtitles be translated into Tamil?
Yes, through English. English subtitles go straight into Tamil by a dedicated English to Indian languages route; a German or French file is put into English first and then into Tamil by that route. It counts as one file either way.
In our test of translation from English, Tamil scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. A German line with “8:46 Uhr” reached Tamil as “8.46”, with a full stop in the time, so glance at times in files that came through English.
Do Tamil subtitles need more room than English?
A little. Tamil ran about a tenth longer than English in our test translations. A subtitle’s time can’t stretch, so a long one gets two fuller lines, never a third: up to 2 lines of about 42 characters, broken only between words.
Tamil builds words by adding endings, so a single word such as வெள்ளிக்கிழமைக்கு (Friday, with an ending) can be long. Lines never break inside one, which keeps every word readable.
Are the Tamil subtitles polite or casual?
Polite. “Please sit down, sir” became “தயவுசெய்து உட்காருங்கள், ஐயா”, and even “you know” took the respectful form. That suits lectures and most videos; for a casual channel, change lines to informal forms where they should sound friendlier.
The filler line “Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal” came back as “சரி, உங்களுக்குத் தெரியும், இது ஒரு பெரிய விஷயமாகும்”.
What should you check in Tamil subtitles?
Numbers and dates. Our test turned 6.5 into “6.50” and ran a date together as “அக்டோபர் 16,2026”, so compare figures with your original. Times stay on the 12-hour clock with பிற்பகல் (afternoon), and names are spelled in Tamil script.

Is it free to translate subtitles to Tamil?
Yes. Translate 3 subtitle files a day into Tamil, each up to 30,000 characters of text, with no account. A file that goes through English on the way still counts as one.
Can this page make Tamil subtitles from Tamil speech?
No. It translates subtitle files you already have into Tamil. The site’s tools don’t transcribe Tamil speech, so there is no way here to turn a Tamil recording into subtitles.
Are the subtitles in Tamil script?
Yes. The translation is written in Tamil script, names included, so Maria Lopez becomes மரியா லோபஸ். Numbers keep the digits 0 to 9.
Will the Tamil subtitles stay in sync with the video?
Yes. Each Tamil subtitle keeps the number and the start and end times of the subtitle it translates, and the file holds the same count as yours.
Can I show the English and the Tamil at the same time?
Yes. The bilingual SRT puts the original line above the Tamil in every subtitle, useful for a family audience that reads one language better than the other.
Does my file get uploaded?
The file is read in your browser. Only its subtitle text goes, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service that sends Tamil back and keeps nothing. NoteOwl stores neither your file nor the Tamil.
