How it works

How do you turn a subtitle file into Italian?

Drop the SRT or VTT here; Italian is already chosen as the language to translate into. Press Translate: the subtitle text goes out in batches and each Italian subtitle takes the slot of the line it replaces. Check a few, then save the file.

  1. 1

    Choose the subtitle file

SRT or VTT, in English or any language on the From list. The page recognises an English file on its own.

  2. 2

    Translate into Italian

Neighbouring subtitles travel together, so a sentence cut in half still reads as one Italian sentence.

  3. 3

    Save the Italian subtitles

As SRT or VTT, or as a bilingual SRT that shows the original line above the Italian.

Does Italian need more room on screen than English?

A little. Italian text runs about a tenth longer than the English it translates, yet each subtitle keeps its original start and end. So a long line is spread over fuller lines, never an extra line or an extra subtitle.

Lines aim for 42 characters, read at about 17 characters a second, and break between words, preferably after a comma and not straight after a short word such as “di”, “il” or “che”. If a fast speaker’s subtitle looks crowded, trim a word or two; the timing is already right.

Will the Italian subtitles use tu or Lei?

Both, depending on the line. In our test, “Can you send me the report before Friday?” became “Puoi inviarmi il rapporto prima di venerdì?” with tu, while “Please sit down, sir” became “Per favore si sieda, signore” with the polite Lei.

For a training video, an interview with a public figure or anything addressed to customers, search the Italian file for tu forms (puoi, sai, ti) and change the ones that should be Lei. A relaxed vlog can stay as it is.

What does Italian have to decide that English leaves open?

Gender. Italian nouns and past participles show it, and English often doesn’t. In our test, “Our doctor said she would call back” came back as “Il nostro medico ha detto che richiamerà”: the doctor turned masculine and “she” disappeared.

If the doctor on screen is a woman, write “la nostra dottoressa”. Mixed groups take the masculine plural, as Italian normally does: “The teachers were tired after the trip” became “Gli insegnanti erano stanchi dopo il viaggio”.

How do numbers, dates and times look in Italian subtitles?

The Italian way. Our test turned “6.5 percent” into “6,5 percento”, “$1,250” into “$1.250” and “3:30 p.m.” into “15:30”, with the date as “16 ottobre 2026”. Only the dollar sign stayed in front, as in English.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.

FAQ

Translating subtitles into Italian: questions

Can I translate subtitles to Italian for free?

Yes. Up to 3 subtitle files a day go into Italian at no cost, each with up to 30,000 characters of text. There’s no account to create and nothing is added to your subtitles.

How good is the Italian translation?

In our test of translation from English, Italian scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Gender, names and the choice between tu and Lei are still worth a quick read before you publish.

Will Italian viewers see the subtitles in sync?

Yes. The Italian file keeps the original subtitle numbers and every start and end time, so it plays in step with the video exactly as the original file did.

Is a bilingual file useful for learning Italian?

Yes. The bilingual SRT shows the original line with the Italian under it, in the same subtitle and at the same moment. Learners read both at once, and anyone checking the translation can compare them line by line.

Which languages can go into Italian?

English and the other languages in the From list, such as Spanish, French, German or Portuguese. An English file is recognised by itself; for anything else, pick the language or leave it on Detect automatically.

Is my subtitle file sent anywhere?

The file itself stays in your browser. Only the words of the subtitles go, a batch at a time, to a cloud AI translation service that returns the Italian and keeps nothing. NoteOwl doesn’t store the original or the translation.
