How it works

How do you put subtitles into Portuguese?

Add the SRT or VTT here; Portuguese is set as the target. Press Translate and the text of the subtitles goes off in batches and comes back in Portuguese, each subtitle in the time slot of the line it replaces. Read it through, then download.

  1. 1

    Pick your subtitle file

An SRT or VTT in English or another language from the list; English files are spotted automatically.

  2. 2

    Translate to Portuguese

Runs of consecutive subtitles are translated together, so a sentence that spans two of them stays one sentence.

  3. 3

    Download

Portuguese SRT or VTT, or a bilingual SRT with the original line on top.

Are the subtitles in Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Brazilian. In our test, “Can you send me the report before Friday?” became “Você pode me enviar o relatório antes de sexta-feira?”: você, with the pronoun before the verb, as Brazilians say it. Viewers in Portugal would expect “Pode enviar-me…?”.

Everyday vocabulary can differ between the two as well, so a channel aimed at Portugal should give the file a read with that audience in mind. For viewers in Brazil, it’s ready as it comes.

Will Portuguese subtitles fit in the original timing?

Yes. Portuguese runs a little longer than English, and every subtitle keeps its original start and end, so a longer translation simply fills its lines more fully. It never spills into an extra line or an extra subtitle.

Each line aims for 42 characters and breaks between words at the most balanced point, so a viewer reading at about 17 characters a second gets two even lines rather than one long line over a short one.

Does Portuguese need to know who the people are?

Yes, and it uses whatever English gives it. “Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow” came back as “Nossa médica disse que ligaria de volta amanhã”: “she” made the doctor a woman. Mixed groups take the masculine plural: “Os professores estavam cansados”.

The translator sees only text, never the speaker. “Thank you all for coming today” became “Obrigado a todos por virem hoje”, the thanks a man gives; a woman says “obrigada”, so check thank-yous and adjectives that describe whoever is talking.

How are numbers and times written in Portuguese subtitles?

With a decimal comma, a thousands dot and the 24-hour clock written with an h: “6,5 por cento”, “$1.250” and “às 15h30”. The date reads “16 de outubro de 2026”, and the dollar sign stays in front.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.

FAQ

Questions about putting subtitles into Portuguese

Is it free to translate subtitles to Portuguese?

It is. You can translate 3 files a day into Portuguese, each holding up to 30,000 characters of subtitle text, without an account and without a watermark.

How good is the Portuguese?

Our test of translation from English put Portuguese above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. It reads as natural Brazilian Portuguese; the points to check are regional words, who is speaking, and names.

Which languages can I translate into Portuguese from?

English, plus the other languages on the From list, such as Spanish, French, Italian or German. An English file is recognised as soon as you add it; for the rest, choose the language or use Detect automatically.

Will the timing still match my video?

Yes. Numbers, start times and end times are copied from your file unchanged, so the Portuguese subtitles appear and disappear exactly where the originals did.

What is the bilingual SRT for?

It puts the original line and the Portuguese one together in each subtitle. Learners of Portuguese can follow both, and a reviewer who knows both languages can check every line without opening two files.

Does NoteOwl keep my subtitles?

No. Your browser opens the file, and only the subtitle text goes, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service that sends back the Portuguese and discards what it received. NoteOwl stores neither version.
