Move NoteOwl Pro to a replacement Mac

Last updated Checked against NoteOwl 1.0.0

A NoteOwl Pro licence works on one Mac. If that Mac is broken, lost, stolen or repaired in a way that replaced its identity, sign in on the new Mac and choose Activate this Mac, then Replace a broken or lost Mac, free once in any rolling twelve months.

Can I move NoteOwl Pro to another Mac?

Yes, once in any rolling twelve months, if the Mac it's on is broken, lost, stolen or was repaired in a way that replaced its identity. The move is free, and you make it from the new Mac. A second Mac needs its own licence.

A licence is bound to the Mac it was activated on, and to your email address. The full terms are in the NoteOwl Terms.

Replace your Mac

Do this on the new Mac, connected to the internet. You don't need the old Mac.

  1. Install NoteOwl on the new Mac and open it.
  2. Click … next to your name at the bottom of the sidebar and choose License….
  3. Type the email address you bought NoteOwl Pro with in the Your email field and click Continue, then type the code NoteOwl emails you in the Code from your email field and click Verify.
  4. Click Activate this Mac. Because your licence is still active on the old Mac, NoteOwl can't activate this one, and it offers Replace a broken or lost Mac.
  5. Click Replace a broken or lost Mac. If you have more than one Mac activated, NoteOwl asks You have more than one Mac activated. Choose the one you are replacing.: click Choose a Mac and pick the old one.
  6. NoteOwl confirms with This Mac is now the activated one., and says the old Mac has been deactivated. NoteOwl Pro is now on for this Mac.

If you moved to the new Mac with Migration Assistant, License… may already say This activation belongs to your previous Mac. In that case, click Replace a broken or lost Mac there.

In the list of Macs, the one you're using can't be picked, and NoteOwl says The Mac you are using now can’t be the one you replace. Macs on a company licence can't be replaced either: that licence stays with the Mac it was assigned to.

What if I've already replaced a Mac this year?

The free replacement is once in any rolling twelve months. If you've used it, NoteOwl says Your complimentary replacement has already been used in the last 12 months. and offers two choices:

  • Contact Support opens the NoteOwl support page in your browser. You can also email support@noteowl.ai with the email address you bought with.
  • Purchase another licence starts a new purchase for this Mac.

What happens to the old Mac?

It's deactivated, so your licence now belongs to the new Mac. If the old Mac turns up and NoteOwl is opened on it, it goes back to NoteOwl Free the next time it checks your licence online, which it does at most once a week.

Replacing a Mac moves only the licence. Your recordings, transcripts and notes are stored on each Mac, so the ones on the old Mac stay there. Migration Assistant can move them to the new Mac along with NoteOwl. If the old Mac still works, you can also save a copy with Export all data… in Settings → Memory.

Replacing a Mac isn't a refund. For refunds, see the refund policy.
