Korean to English audio translator

This Korean to English audio translator writes down a recording in Korean, then puts each line into English, so a meeting, a lesson or a voice message from Korea can be read in English, with the time of every paragraph and the Hangul one switch away.

How it works

How do you translate a Korean recording into English?

To translate Korean audio to English, drop the recording on this page, which listens for Korean. The speech is transcribed in Hangul in short pieces, then translated in batches of lines, each keeping its time. Read the English, and open the Korean when a line needs checking.

  1. 1

    Add the Korean recording

A meeting with a team in Seoul, a class, an interview or a voice message, as MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG.

  2. 2

    Hangul, then English

Transcribed in Korean and then translated, up to 30 minutes of each recording.

  3. 3

    Take the English with you

Copy it, or save TXT or a Word file with times beside each paragraph.

How well does Korean speech come through in English?

The meaning comes through, though in our test of whole recordings Korean scored lower in English than most languages. Much came out exactly right: a date the speaker read out in full words became “On August 15, 1940, the Allied forces invaded southern France”.

Where the English goes wrong, it is usually a name or a rare word. Every paragraph keeps its time, so the doubtful ones are quick to replay.

Which Korean words deserve a second look in English?

Words with more than one meaning. Korean has many words written alike that mean different things, and the translation picks the sense that fits the sentence; when the sentence gives little to go on, it can pick the other one. Read unusual or technical words with the recording at hand.

Why do Korean recordings sometimes give wrong names in English?

Names are where Korean transcription slips most. The speaker said 깁슨 (Gibson); the transcript wrote 깁스, and the English said “Gibbs was taken to a hospital”. When a written Korean text adds the original spelling in brackets, the translation uses it, but speech has no brackets.

그는 최근 브리즈번 오픈(Brisbane Open) 경기에서 라오니치(Raonic)에게 패했다.
English translationHe recently lost to Raonic in the Brisbane Open match.
피케 주니어(Piquet Jr.)는 2009년 헝가리 그랑프리 이후 파면되었다.
English translationPiquet Jr. was dismissed after the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.

What does English lose from Korean speech levels?

The ending of every sentence. Korean marks politeness and respect with 요, 습니다, 께서 and verb endings, and English has nothing equal: polite and casual Korean read alike. Who was being respectful shows only through words like “please” or a title.

Korean meetings every week?

NoteOwl understands Korean on your Mac: Korean meetings and recordings get unlimited transcription, each speaker is labelled and everything stays searchable. For the Korean transcript alone, use Korean audio to text.

FAQ

Korean recordings in English: questions

Is the Korean to English audio translator free?

Yes, without signing up: 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes. The English, the Korean transcript and all downloads are part of it.

Can I read the Korean transcript as well?

Yes. Switch Show to Original for the Hangul transcript, which has the same times as the English transcript, and save it as text or SRT.

Are subjects added in the English?

Often. Korean leaves out “he”, “she” or “we” when the situation makes it clear, and English needs one, so the translation chooses. The lines around it usually decide it, as the transcript is translated in batches.

Does it handle Korean mixed with English?

This page treats all of it as Korean. If speakers switch between the languages for long stretches, use the main audio translator with Detect automatically.

Will the transcript show who spoke?

No. You get the words and their times. On a Mac, NoteOwl labels every speaker in its own transcripts.

What happens to my recording?

It stays on your device. Short pieces of the sound go from your browser to a cloud AI transcription service, the Korean text to a cloud AI translation service, and both discard it after replying; NoteOwl stores nothing.
