How it works

How do you get English subtitles for a Korean video?

To translate a Korean video to English, drop it on this page. The browser pulls out the sound, the Korean is transcribed in Hangul, and the lines are translated and timed as English subtitles within the moments they were spoken. Download the English SRT.

  1. 1

    Choose the Korean video

A vlog, a lecture, a product review or a family video, as MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM.

  2. 2

    Let the subtitles build

Hangul transcript, English translation, then timing, for up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Use the .en.srt

Load it in a player or upload it; Original gives the Korean subtitles.

Why do English subtitles carry more letters than Korean ones?

Because Korean says the same in about half the characters. The English gets lines of up to 42 characters, read at 17 a second, and is laid out after translation, so its subtitles follow English sentences rather than the Korean subtitles one for one.

How well does Korean speech come through in English subtitles?

The meaning comes through, though Korean scored lower in English than most languages in our test of whole recordings. Plenty was right: “reflect clearly on the surface of Victoria Harbour”, the film National Treasure. Names can be spelled by sound: del Potro became “Del Porto”.

When a subtitle reads strangely, switch to Original and find the Korean subtitle at the same moment; correct the English line in the SRT, and the timing stays as it is.

What happens to numbers read out in Korean?

Ordinary figures come through, but codes read digit by digit can go astray. A speaker reading the Wi-Fi standard 802.11 aloud was transcribed in Korean number words, and the English subtitle spelled out those sounds instead of giving the digits. Type such codes back in.

Units follow the speaker. A Korean sentence that gave a wind speed only in km/h came back as “riding a wind of 165 km/h”, with no miles added; convert them yourself if your viewers expect miles.

Should you keep the Korean subtitles as well?

Yes, for many videos. Original gives Korean subtitles in Hangul, 16 characters to a line, timed to the same speech. Learners of Korean can watch with both, and you can check any English subtitle against what was said.

FAQ

English subtitles for Korean videos: questions

Is the Korean to English video translator free?

Yes: 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes each, no account and no watermark. English and Korean subtitle files are both included.

Can I watch a Korean video with these subtitles on my computer?

Yes. Open the video in a desktop player and add the .en.srt from its subtitle menu, or name the SRT like the video so the player finds it.

Do honorifics show in the English?

Not directly. English has no endings for politeness, so a respectful Korean line and a casual one can look the same in the subtitles.

Does it dub the video?

No. The page writes English subtitles; nothing is spoken and the video file stays as it was.

Will the subtitles say who is talking?

No, only the words. NoteOwl on a Mac adds each speaker’s name to the SRT files it saves.

Is the video sent anywhere?

No. Your browser keeps the video and sends only short pieces of its sound to a cloud AI transcription service, then the Korean text to a cloud AI translation service, which both discard them. The picture is never sent.
