How it works

How do you add Italian subtitles to a video?

Pick the Italian video and drop it on the page. Its sound is transcribed as Italian, stretch by stretch, and the words are cut into subtitles that follow the speaker’s pauses. Read them in the preview, then save the SRT or the VTT.

  1. 1

    Choose the video

A lezione filmed on a phone, a vlog, an intervista or a webinar recording, or just the audio of one.

  2. 2

    Italian, cue by cue

Each subtitle shows its number, its start and end and its lines. The first 30 minutes of a longer video are subtitled.

  3. 3

    Save the file

SRT for YouTube or Premiere Pro, VTT for a player on your own site, or plain text.

Why set the subtitles to Italian?

Because a guessed language can slip on a short or noisy line, and a run of subtitles in the wrong language under Italian speech is useless to the people watching. With the page set to Italian, every cue is written in Italian, whatever the accent.

If the video moves between Italian and English, the main subtitle generator suits it better: it works out the language of each stretch of speech on its own.

How do apostrophes and accents look in Italian subtitles?

Elided words stay joined, so a line never breaks after l' or dell'. In our Italian test recording, l'apprendimento, nell'agosto and dall'autostazione each counted as one word, and the accents came back on è, à, ù and ò, including a capital È opening a sentence.

Lines averaged about 30 characters, and even the longest words fitted with room to spare.

An elided word
The subtitle’s linese sviluppare l'apprendimento / degli studenti
A capital È
The subtitle’s linesÈ collegata, anche / se solitamente non li comprende,
A 17-letter word
The subtitle’s linese il traffico continua a scorrere quasi / ininterrottamente per tutto l'anno.

How are numbers and times written in Italian subtitles?

As digits, nearly always: “15 metri”, “10 agenti”, “5 volte”. Clock times come with a full stop, as in “alle 23.35” and “tra le 6.30 e le 7.30”. A house style may ask for something else, and the file is easy to change.

Netflix’s Italian style guide, for one, spells out the numbers one to ten and writes times with a colon. Edit those words in the SRT or VTT with any text editor; the timing lines stay exactly as they are.

Do the subtitles follow Italian subtitling conventions?

On length and speed, yes. Netflix’s Italian guide allows 42 characters a line and 17 characters a second for adult viewers, the same limits this page uses, with 2 lines at most and no dots when a sentence runs into the next subtitle.

One convention is yours to add: when two people share a subtitle, each line starts with a hyphen and a space (“- Arrivi?” / “- Tra un minuto.”). The web generator writes the words only, with no speaker marks.

FAQ

Italian subtitles: common questions

Is the Italian subtitle generator free?

Yes. Subtitle 3 Italian videos a day, up to 30 minutes of each, without an account or a watermark. The SRT, VTT and text downloads all come with it.

Can it put Italian subtitles on an English video?

No. It writes down the Italian that is spoken and never translates. For an English video, make English subtitles on the main generator, then translate the text lines of the SRT and leave every number and time alone.

Why does a sentence carry on into the next subtitle?

Because a subtitle holds 2 lines and stays up 7 seconds at most, so a long Italian sentence spreads over two or three. The cut falls at a comma or a pause where there is one, and no dots are added between the parts.

Which file should I upload to YouTube?

Either one: YouTube accepts SRT and VTT. Set the track’s language to Italian so viewers find the subtitles under that name in the player.

Is my Italian video uploaded?

The picture never leaves your device. The page takes the sound out in your browser and sends it in short pieces, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service that transcribes and discards each one. NoteOwl keeps nothing.
