How it works

How do you add Finnish subtitles to an English video?

To translate an English video to Finnish, open it on this page. The sound is taken out in your browser, the English is transcribed and translated, and the Finnish is cut into subtitles timed to the speech. Download the SRT and add it to your video.

  1. 1

    Open the English video

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM. Nothing but the sound is read.

  2. 2

    Finnish subtitles are made

Transcribed, translated and timed, for videos up to 30 minutes long.

  3. 3

    Download SRT or VTT

The Finnish subtitles, or the English ones under Original.

How do long Finnish words fit in subtitles?

Whole. A line breaks only between words, so a long Finnish word moves to the next line instead of being hyphenated. Lines hold up to 42 characters, 2 lines per subtitle, and a sentence such as “Sundarban on julistettu Unescon maailmanperintökohteeksi.” splits after “Unescon”.

Overall, Finnish ran about the same length as English in our test. Each subtitle stays 1 to 7 seconds, long enough to read at 17 characters a second, and because the Finnish is cut after translation, the count can differ a little from the English subtitles.

Which quotation marks and time format do Finnish subtitles use?

The Finnish ones. Quotations open and close with the same mark, ”hyödylliseksi”; clock times take a full stop, “kello 15.30”; dates take one after the day, “16. lokakuuta 2026”. In our check, “Kokous on 16. lokakuuta 2026 kello 15.30.” fitted on one subtitle line.

The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.

Why do names look different in Finnish subtitles?

Because Finnish adds endings to them. A storm called Fred appears as “Fredin” in “Fredin tuulennopeus”, and “Dr. Patel” as “Tohtori Patel”. That is correct Finnish; just make sure the name inside the ending is spelled the way your video spells it.

Do the subtitles address viewers as sinä or te?

Some lines one way, some the other. “Voitko…?” used sinä, while “Istukaa alas, herra” used the polite plural, and a room of people got “Kiitos kaikille, että tulitte tänään”. Decide how your channel speaks to viewers and adjust the odd line.

How good is English to Finnish translation?

Good: in our test, translation from English into Finnish scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Watch the video once with the Finnish on, mainly for names and the sinä or te choice, before you publish.

FAQ

Questions about Finnish subtitles for English videos

Is the English to Finnish video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and no watermark. Finnish SRT and VTT and the English subtitles are included.

Does it create a Finnish voice-over?

No. It makes Finnish subtitles and leaves the video untouched. Upload the SRT with the video, or burn it in with an editor.

How do I add Finnish subtitles on YouTube?

In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, pick the video, add Finnish and upload the SRT with timing. Viewers can then choose Finnish in the player.

Can I make Swedish subtitles for Finland too?

Yes, on the English to Swedish page. The subtitles are in standard Swedish, which Swedish speakers in Finland read too.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The browser takes out the sound and sends short pieces to a cloud AI transcription service, then the English text to a cloud AI translation service. Each discards what it gets, and the picture never leaves your device.

Can I keep English subtitles as well?

Yes. Original has English subtitles for the same speech; publish both so viewers can choose.
