Do Norwegian subtitles need more room than English?
No. Norwegian came out about the same length as English in our test, so a subtitle rarely runs tight. Each is cut afresh: at most 2 lines of 42 characters, 1 to 7 seconds on screen, and readable at 17 characters a second.
The Norwegian is split into subtitles after it is translated, following its own sentences and the speaker’s pauses, so the number of subtitles can differ a little from the English set.
Which quotation marks do Norwegian subtitles use?
The Norwegian ones, « ». In our test, a quoted word came back as «nyttig» and a quoted place name as «Timbuktu». Units follow Norwegian habit too: km/h became “km/t”, and the Summer Olympics “sommer-OL”.
Do Norwegian dates and times stay on one subtitle?
They should. Norwegian writes “den 16. oktober”, and the subtitle rules don’t read that full stop after the day as the end of a sentence, so a subtitle isn’t ended there. In our check, “Møtet er den 16. oktober 2026, kl. 15:30.” fitted on a single line.
One thing to change by hand: the price kept the English “$1,250”. Norwegian viewers expect a space between thousands.
- The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.
- Norwegian subtitleMøtet er den 16. oktober 2026, kl. 15:30.
- The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.
- Norwegian subtitlePrisen gikk opp med 6,5 prosent til $1,250.
- Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal.
- Norwegian subtitleVel, du vet, det er en ganske stor sak.

How do Norwegian subtitles address the viewer?
With du, as Norwegians talk to each other, and “alle” for a crowd: “Takk til alle som kom i dag.” The one oddity is “sir”, which stayed English in “Vennligst sett deg ned, sir.” On screen it usually reads better cut.
How good is English to Norwegian translation?
Very good in our test: translation from English into Norwegian scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. The subtitles are in Bokmål; a channel that publishes in Nynorsk will need to adapt them.

FAQ
Questions about Norwegian subtitles for English videos
Is the English to Norwegian video translator free?
Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and no watermark. Norwegian SRT and VTT and the English subtitles are included.
Does it dub the video in Norwegian?
No. It creates Norwegian subtitles and leaves your video unchanged. Add the SRT in your player, or burn it in with an editor.
How do I add the Norwegian subtitles on YouTube?
In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, add Norwegian and upload the SRT with timing. Viewers can then switch it on in the player.
Are the subtitles in Bokmål or Nynorsk?
Bokmål, the written standard most Norwegians use. Nynorsk is not offered.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The sound is taken out in your browser, and only short pieces of it go to a cloud AI transcription service, then the English text to a cloud AI translation service. Each discards what it receives; the picture is never sent.
Can Swedish and Danish viewers follow these subtitles?
Many can, since the three languages are partly mutually intelligible, but for a Swedish or Danish audience, make subtitles in their own language on the English to Swedish or English to Danish page.
