How it works
How do you get English subtitles for a French video?
To translate a French video to English, drop the file on this page. Your browser lifts out the sound, the speech is transcribed as French, each line becomes English, and the English is timed as subtitles to the French speech. Download SRT for players, VTT for the web.

Do English subtitles need less room than French?
Yes. Across our French test recording, the English came out about a sixth shorter in characters and used 898 words where the French transcript had 1,078. English subtitles therefore sit lightly on screen, easy to read at the pace French is spoken.
Each one has at most 2 lines of up to 42 characters and stays up long enough to read at about 17 characters a second, starting with the French words it translates.
Does French punctuation carry over into English subtitles?
Mostly not: French times like “8 h 46” became “8:46”. One French habit did slip through in our test recording, a space before the percent sign (“100 % certainty”), so search the English file for “ %” before publishing.
Are miles and kilometres switched round for English viewers?
No, they follow the French. “165 km/h (105 miles par heure)” became “165 km/h (105 miles per hour)”, in the French order. For an American audience you might put the miles first; the numbers themselves came through unchanged.
How well is French speech understood?
Well. Our test rated French transcription clean and its English strong. Names are the weak point: a city the transcript heard as “Machad” (Mashhad) kept that spelling in English. Check people and places against the video before you publish.

FAQ
French videos in English: common questions
Is the French to English video translator free?
Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and no watermark; you can save both the English and the French subtitles.
Can I watch a French video with these subtitles?
Yes. Give the English SRT the same file name as the video and keep it in the same folder: VLC and similar players pick it up when the video opens.
Is there an English voice-over?
No. The page writes English subtitles and leaves your video and its French sound as they are.
How do I publish the English subtitles on YouTube?
In YouTube Studio, go to Subtitles, select the video, add English and upload the SRT with timing; English-speaking viewers then find it in the subtitle menu.
What if the video mixes French and English?
This page transcribes all the speech as French. For a video in both languages, use the main video translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.
Is the video itself uploaded?
No. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service, then the French text goes to a cloud AI translation service; both discard it after replying. The picture never leaves your device.
