How it works

How do you add English subtitles to a Norwegian video?

To translate a Norwegian video to English, pick the file here. Its sound is pulled out in the browser and transcribed as Norwegian, each line is translated, and the English is timed as subtitles. Save the English SRT and add it to the video or your channel.

  1. 1

    Pick the Norwegian video

A vlog, a lecture, an interview or a product demo, as MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM.

  2. 2

    English subtitles are timed

Transcribed, translated and timed together, for videos of up to 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Save SRT or VTT

Choose Original if you also want Norwegian subtitles on the same timing.

How well does Norwegian speech become English subtitles?

Strongly, in our test: Norwegian speech, transcribed and then translated, gave one of the better English results we measured. The transcript is good, with its slips mainly in names and rare words, so those are what to read closely on screen.

Which words should you check before you publish?

Place and person names, mostly. The city of Goma was transcribed “Gohma” and kept that spelling in the English subtitles. Technical words fared better: “Fisjonsbomben” became “The fission bomb”, exactly right. Search the SRT for each name once.

Do numbers appear as digits or words in the English?

Either, so make them consistent. In our test, “9 medlemmer”, read aloud as “ni”, reached the English as “nine members”, and “sju skip” as “seven ships”. Digits save room on a subtitle line, so you may prefer to change them.

Watch for the odd literal phrase too: “Klokken 08:46 på sekundet” (at 8:46 to the second) came back as “At 08:46 seconds”. “At exactly 8:46” is what an English viewer expects.

Will the English subtitles match the Norwegian ones?

In timing, yes; one for one, not always. Norwegian and English ran about the same length in our test, and the English is cut into its own subtitles of up to 2 lines and 42 characters, each starting as its Norwegian words are spoken.

Every English subtitle stays up long enough to read at about 17 characters a second. Publish the Norwegian subtitles from Original beside them so both audiences have a track.

Producing Norwegian videos with several speakers?

NoteOwl understands Norwegian on your Mac, Bokmål and Nynorsk: it imports MP4 videos, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. For Norwegian subtitles of Norwegian speech, use the Norwegian subtitle generator.

FAQ

Questions about English subtitles for Norwegian videos

Is the Norwegian to English video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and no watermark. The English and Norwegian subtitle files are both included.

Does it give the video an English voice?

No. You get English subtitles to show with the video; the Norwegian soundtrack and the file itself are left alone.

Does it understand Norwegian dialects?

Yes, dialect speech is transcribed too. Check the English closely where the speaker’s dialect is strong.

Where do the English subtitles go?

Upload the SRT in YouTube Studio under Subtitles, with English as the language, or load it in your video player or editor. VTT suits web players.

Is my video sent anywhere?

Only its sound, in short pieces, to a cloud AI transcription service, and then the Norwegian text to a cloud AI translation service. Each discards what it receives; the picture never leaves your device.

Can the subtitles show who is talking?

Not on this page: the English subtitles carry the words only. NoteOwl on a Mac puts each speaker’s name into the SRT files it saves.
