How does NoteOwl write Estonian?

With õ, ä, ö and ü, and most of the meaning intact, though long compounds are sometimes split. In the sample, jõulukampaaniaga, üleval, kõige and järgmisel were right, while uudiskirja came out as “uudis kirja” and väljasaatmist as “välja saat mist”.

Numbers were mixed. The same amount was said twice: the first time, “viiekümnest eurost” came out as “5. eurost”, the second time correctly, in digits, as “50 eurost”. The date “esimesel detsembril” came out in words, as “esimeselt desembril”.

Short words also ran together: “Tere, Andres” became “Tereandres”, and “kasum ära” became “kasumärä”. Nõus lost its õ to become “Nous”, and suurepärane was split into “Suureb ärane”.

How do you dictate in Estonian on a Mac?

Tap fn in any app, speak Estonian and tap fn again: the words type at your cursor. In Settings → Auto-Context → Spoken language, choose Auto-detect, because Estonian isn’t one of the languages that menu can pin.

The setting starts on your Mac’s own language, so on a Mac set to English, switch it to Auto-detect before you dictate or record a meeting in Estonian. Recordings you import are always detected automatically, the way NoteOwl recognised the sample above.

Where is Estonian spoken, and what do people record in it?

Estonian is the first language of about 1.1 million people, nearly all of them in Estonia, and one of the European Union’s official languages. NoteOwl lists it as one language, without regional variants.

At work that means the koosolek and its protokoll, calls with customers, and interviews. The sample is a small online shop, an e-pood, deciding from what order value its Christmas delivery is free, read in standard Estonian.

How do you get the best Estonian transcripts?

Check figures and long compound words first, since that is where the sample slipped, and teach NoteOwl the words you use every day with custom vocabulary.

A Vocabulary rule, part of NoteOwl Pro, can join a split compound for good: under “When I say…” type the form NoteOwl writes, such as uudis kirja, and under “Replace with…” the one you want, uudiskirja. Estonian has many case forms, so each one you use needs its own rule.
