How it works
How do you transcribe Estonian audio?
Drop in the recording. It is cut into short pieces where the speaker pauses, and every piece is written as Estonian, so the transcript grows paragraph by paragraph with a time on each. Copy or download it when it is done.
- 1
Drop in the file
A meeting, a lecture, a podcast episode or a voice message: audio formats and videos both work.
- 2
Estonian from start to end
Each piece is decoded as Estonian, never detected, for up to 30 minutes per file.
- 3
Copy or download
Paste the text into a document, or save Word, plain text, SRT or VTT.
Does the transcript keep õ, ä, ö and ü?
Yes, in every word that has them, and ž stayed in režiimi and brožüürides. The one letter we saw lost was š in a borrowed word, viiematšilise, which came back as viiematsilise.
Where do Estonian transcripts go wrong?
In two places Estonian spelling depends on: compound words and long sounds. Compounds were sometimes split or joined the wrong way, and a doubled letter, which marks length, was dropped or added.
Because pealin and vettes look like ordinary Estonian, a spell checker will not always flag them. Reading the transcript while the audio plays catches them quickly.

- A long consonant

- A short one

| A compound | keskkonnaeelnõu → keskkonna eelnõu |
| Two words | hinna sees → hinnasees |
| A long consonant | pealinn → pealin |
| A short one | vetes → vettes |
How are dates and numbers written?
The Estonian way, with the ordinal full stop: “15. augustil 1940” and “2009. aastast”. Measurements stay short (35 mm), “~500” came back as “umbes 500”, and round numbers said as words, such as sada, often stayed as words.
Why is the converter set to Estonian?
Estonian and Finnish are close relatives, so when the language is guessed, a short piece can be written as the wrong one. With the language set, every piece is written as Estonian, with Estonian spelling, from start to end.
English names and brand terms said in Estonian stay in Latin letters, as Wild Card did. If a speaker switches to English for long stretches, the main converter detects each piece’s language instead.
Can you work in Estonian on a Mac?
Yes. NoteOwl understands Estonian on your Mac: it transcribes Estonian recordings and meetings there with unlimited transcription, names the speakers and makes everything searchable, uploading nothing. Its dictation, free in the app, types Estonian into any app.
FAQ
Estonian audio to text: your questions
Does the Estonian converter cost anything?
No. It handles 3 files a day, up to 30 minutes each, without an account, and the downloads are included.
Are names spelled correctly?
Familiar names usually are. Foreign ones are spelled by ear: Goethe came back as Kööte, and a Portuguese place name came back as ordinary Estonian words. Check every name against the recording.
Is my recording sent anywhere?
Only in short pieces, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service that transcribes and discards each one. NoteOwl does not keep the audio or the Estonian transcript, so save the text before you close the page.
Does it add punctuation?
Full stops and commas, yes. Quotation marks („…“) and brackets are left out; a bracketed aside comes back between commas instead.
Can I use it for Estonian subtitles?
Yes. SRT and VTT downloads give each line its start and end time, with õ, ä, ö and ü intact, for a video editor or a course platform.
