What does NoteOwl’s Latvian transcript look like?

Here’s a sample recording, and NoteOwl’s transcript of it, unedited. On this sample NoteOwl matched 92.5% of the characters (punctuation and spacing aside).

The recording · 0:53

A short work call between Liene and Mārtiņš. NoteOwl detected the language by itself.

  1. kopā desmitejā novembrī. Labi, lice seturdienai pabēšu otrās epizodes montāžu un nosūtīš tev noklausīties. Lieliski

In English: together, on the tenth of November. Okay, by Thursday I’ll finish editing the second episode and send it to you to listen to. Great,

  2. es tikmēr sagatavoša epizožu aprakstus un vāk attēlu.

In English: meanwhile I’ll prepare the episode descriptions and the cover image.

  3. Velvien lieta vai ievada mūziku atstajum to pašu, kas bija izmēģināju mierakstē. Jā mantāļot patīk labi, tad zatudbien sazināmies,

In English: One more thing: do we keep the same intro music we had in the trial recording? Yes, I really like it. Okay, then we’ll be in touch on Thursday,

  4. paldies

    In English: thanks,

  5. paldies uz dzirdēšanaos.

    In English: thanks, talk soon.

How does NoteOwl write Latvian?

With its long vowels and softened consonants: ā, ē, ī, ū, š, ž and ņ all appear in the sample, in words like novembrī, montāžu, epizožu, mūziku and skaņa. Most of the meaning came through, but word endings were often clipped.

Latvian carries a lot in its endings, and that is where the sample slipped: nosūtīšu came out as “nosūtīš”, sagatavošu as “sagatavoša”, and vāka attēlu as “vāk attēlu”. Thursday was said twice, and neither ceturtdienai nor ceturtdien came out right.

One sentence near the end came out garbled, and the first question turned raidījumu, the show, into “noraidījumu”, which means a rejection. At 92.5% of characters, a Latvian transcript needs a careful read before it goes anywhere.

How do you dictate in Latvian on a Mac?

Tap fn in any app, speak Latvian and tap fn again: the words type at your cursor. In Settings → Auto-Context → Spoken language, choose Auto-detect, because Latvian isn’t one of the languages that menu can pin.

The setting starts on your Mac’s own language, so on a Mac set to English, switch it to Auto-detect before you dictate or record a meeting in Latvian. Recordings you import are always detected automatically, the way NoteOwl recognised the sample above.

Where is Latvian spoken, and what do people record in it?

Latvian is the first language of about 1.5 million people, most of them in Latvia, and one of the European Union’s official languages. NoteOwl lists it as one language, without regional variants.

At work that means the sanāksme and its protokols, client calls and interviews, and shows like the company podcast the sample plans, read in standard Latvian: three episodes, released together in November.

How do you get the best Latvian transcripts?

Check word endings, weekdays and names, and fix the ones that keep coming back with custom vocabulary. In the sample, the outline of the plan came through, while endings and weekdays slipped.

Names matter too: “Sveiks, Mārtiņ!” came out as “Sveiks Mārting”. A Vocabulary rule, part of NoteOwl Pro, fixes a name like that for good: type Mārting under “When I say…” and Mārtiņ under “Replace with…”, and every transcript after that uses your spelling.
