How it works

How do you make Estonian subtitles for a video?

Drop the video here. The sound is transcribed as Estonian in short pieces, and the words become subtitles of one or two lines, each appearing as it is spoken. Look through them, then download SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Select the video

A lecture, a vlog, a webinar or an interview: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, or just the sound.

  2. 2

    Estonian subtitles

The speech is written in Estonian, piece by piece, for up to 30 minutes of the video.

  3. 3

    Save them

SRT for YouTube and video editors, VTT for your own web player, or plain text.

How are Estonian subtitles laid out?

In one or two lines of up to 42 characters, split after a comma or between phrases, with a new subtitle at a full stop or a pause. Estonian compounds are long, so a line can hold as few as three or four words.

Our 40 Estonian test sentences made 80 subtitles, nine in ten of them two lines long.

How do dates and asides look in Estonian subtitles?

Dates keep the ordinal full stop, as in 15. augustil 1940 and 2009. aastast. Brackets are dropped, so an aside comes back set off by commas instead, and a sign such as ~ is written out as a word: ~500 became umbes 500.

Why set the subtitle language to Estonian?

So every subtitle is written in Estonian. Estonian is closely related to Finnish, and when the language is guessed, a short Estonian phrase can be taken for another language and subtitled in it. Set to Estonian, the whole video stays Estonian.

For a video that switches between Estonian and English or Russian for whole sentences, the main subtitle generator detects the language of each stretch instead.

What should you check in Estonian subtitles?

Names, compound words and borrowed spellings. Names can be spelled by ear, compounds can be joined or split differently from standard spelling, and š and ž in loanwords can swap.

  • Names

Goethe came back as Kööte, and Cincinnatist as two unrelated words. Compare names with the video.

  • Compounds

metsik loodus came back joined as metsikloodus. Split or join words to match the standard spelling.

  • š and ž

brošüürides came back as brožüürides. Loanwords are where this happens.

FAQ

Questions about Estonian subtitles

Is the Estonian subtitle generator free?

Yes. Make subtitles for 3 Estonian videos a day, the first 30 minutes of each, with no account and no watermark.

Can it make English subtitles from Estonian speech?

No. It writes the Estonian that is spoken and doesn’t translate. For English subtitles, translate the text of the SRT and leave the numbers and times as they are.

Will õ and ü survive editing?

Yes, as long as you save the SRT or VTT as UTF-8, the encoding it was downloaded in. Any text editor can open it; keep the numbers, times and blank lines unchanged.

Is the video uploaded?

No. Your browser opens it on your device and takes out its sound. Short pieces of that sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards each; NoteOwl stores no video and no subtitles.

Can I burn the subtitles into the video?

Not here: this page makes a subtitle file. Import the SRT into a video editor and burn it in when you export, or upload it next to the video.

Are speakers named in the subtitles?

No, only the spoken words are written. NoteOwl on a Mac puts the speaker’s name in each subtitle of the SRT files it saves.
