How it works

How do you get Latvian subtitles from an English SRT?

Put the SRT or VTT on the page; Latvian is already the target. Press Translate: the subtitle text goes off a few dozen subtitles at a time and comes back in Latvian, slotted under the original numbers and times. Read it through, then save.

  1. 1

    Choose your file

An .srt or .vtt in English or any language on the From list. A plainly English file is recognised on its own.

  2. 2

    Translate into Latvian

Neighbouring subtitles are sent together, so a sentence split over two still reads as one in Latvian.

  3. 3

    Save the Latvian

As SRT or VTT, or as a bilingual SRT with the original line above each Latvian one.

Why do names get Latvian endings?

Because Latvian gives foreign names its own endings and spelling. In our test, “Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez” came back as “Dr. Patels un Marija Lopesa”. That is normal Latvian, but check each name against how your viewers know the person.

The ending also shifts with the name’s role in the sentence, so one person can be Patels in one subtitle and Patelam in the next. A brand, a channel name or a stage name you want kept exactly as written is worth a search through the downloaded file.

Do Latvian subtitles say tu or jūs?

Both, depending on the line. “Can you send me the report…?” became “Vai varat nosūtīt…?” and “Please sit down, sir” “Lūdzu, sēdieties, kungs”, both jūs, while “you know” became the familiar “tu zini”. Choose one form for the whole video and bring the rest into line.

How are dates, times and prices written in Latvian?

The Latvian way: the year first, a full stop after day and year numbers, a 24-hour time after “plkst.”, a decimal comma, and US dollars written out as ASV dolāri. Gender follows the English too: a woman doctor became “ārste”.

The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.

Will Latvian subtitles fit the original timing?

Yes. Latvian ran about the same length as English across our test sentences, so the room is much the same. Each subtitle is laid out again in up to 2 lines of about 42 characters, keeps its start and end time, and never gains a third line.

Lines break between words and after commas where possible, never in the middle of a long Latvian word. A subtitle that still looks crowded in your player is easiest to fix by trimming a word or two; the timing needs no work.

FAQ

Latvian subtitles: common questions

Can I translate subtitles to Latvian for free?

Yes. You can translate 3 subtitle files a day into Latvian, each holding up to 30,000 characters of text. There is no account to create and nothing is stamped on the subtitles.

Which languages can be translated into Latvian?

English and the other languages in the From list, Lithuanian, Russian, German and Polish among them. Leave From on Detect automatically, or name the language yourself.

How good is the Latvian?

In our test, translation into Latvian from English scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Names and the choice between tu and jūs are still the things to read before you publish.

Will letters such as ā, ķ and ž display correctly?

The file is saved as UTF-8, the usual encoding for subtitles today, so the Latvian letters are stored as they should be. If an old player shows stray symbols, set its subtitle encoding to UTF-8.

Does the Latvian file have the same number of subtitles?

Yes. Every subtitle keeps its number and its start and end time, and none is added or merged, so the Latvian plays in step with the video exactly as your original did.

Can viewers see the original and the Latvian together?

Yes. The bilingual SRT shows your original line with the Latvian line beneath it, in the same subtitle. It suits people learning Latvian and anyone proofreading the translation.

Is my subtitle file uploaded?

Your browser opens the file. Only the subtitle text travels, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service that returns the Latvian and keeps nothing. NoteOwl stores neither your file nor the translation.
