How it works

How do you make Portuguese subtitles from a video?

Drop the video in. The page pulls out its sound, has each short stretch transcribed as Portuguese, and lays the words out as numbered subtitles that start when they are spoken. Look over the preview, then download SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Add the video

An aula, a podcast episode, a Reels clip or a webinar: video or audio, straight from your phone or computer.

  2. 2

    Watch the cues build

Every subtitle appears with its times as the speech is written. The first 30 minutes of a longer video are covered.

  3. 3

    Download

SRT for YouTube and video editors, VTT for a site’s own player.

Why choose a page fixed to Portuguese?

So that no subtitle comes back in a neighbouring language. A guessed language can go astray on a few muffled seconds, and viewers would get a block of subtitles they can’t follow. Fixed to Portuguese, every subtitle is Portuguese from start to finish.

A video that switches between Portuguese and English for whole stretches is the exception: give it to the main subtitle generator, which settles the language of each stretch separately.

How does Portuguese fit on a subtitle line?

Comfortably. Each line holds up to 42 characters, and our Brazilian test lines averaged about 30. Hyphenated pronouns stay with their verb, so “considerava-se” or “Lembre-se” are never split, and question marks stay on the word they follow.

A pronoun after a hyphen
The subtitle’s linesconsiderava-se que elementos como / cálcio e potássio são metais claro,
A question
The subtitle’s linesIsso soa sensato, porque o planeta Terra / não parece que está se mexendo, parece?
Fractions

What should you tidy before publishing Portuguese subtitles?

Short words left at the end of a top line. Netflix’s Brazilian Portuguese guide asks that a line never separate an article from its noun; a few of our test lines still ended on “a” or “um”, so move that word down to the next line.

The same guide breaks lines after punctuation and before conjunctions and prepositions. The generator already prefers a break after a comma or a full stop, the first of those rules.

Are subtitles different for Brazil and Portugal?

The page is set to the Portuguese language, not to a country, so it takes speech from either side of the Atlantic; our test recording was Brazilian. Viewing habits differ: Portugal subtitles foreign films and series for adults, while Brazilian free-to-air TV dubs them.

House styles differ too. Netflix’s guide for Portugal writes figures of a thousand and up in words, such as “mil” or “cinco mil”, so change the digits in the file if you deliver to that style.

Need Portuguese subtitles that name each speaker?

NoteOwl understands Portuguese on your Mac, from Brazil and from Portugal. It transcribes recordings there with unlimited transcription, labels the speakers and saves SRT subtitles with their names. For a transcript to read rather than subtitles, open Portuguese audio to text.

FAQ

Questions about Portuguese subtitles

Is the Portuguese subtitle generator free?

Yes, with no account and no watermark: 3 videos a day, each subtitled up to 30 minutes. You can download SRT, VTT and text from every one.

Can it make Portuguese subtitles for a Spanish or English video?

No. It only writes the Portuguese that is actually spoken; it doesn’t translate. Subtitle the video in its own language first, then translate the lines of that SRT and keep its numbers and times.

Does it add a dash when two people speak?

No. The subtitles carry the words alone, without speaker names or dashes. Professional Portuguese subtitles start each speaker’s line with a hyphen and a space, which you can add in a text editor.

Will the tildes survive in my video editor?

Yes, as long as the file stays UTF-8. If you open the SRT to fix a word, save it as UTF-8 text again; another encoding can turn ã and ç into stray symbols.

Where does my video go?

Nowhere: your browser reads it on your device. Only its sound travels, in short pieces over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each piece and discards it. NoteOwl stores neither video nor subtitles.
