How it works

How do you transcribe Portuguese audio?

Choose the file and stay on the page. It is read in your browser, cut wherever the speaker pauses, and each piece is transcribed as Portuguese while you watch. The finished text can be copied in one click or saved as a document or subtitles.

  1. 1

    Add a recording

An áudio saved from WhatsApp, a recorded aula, a podcast episode or a video call’s MP4.

  2. 2

    Follow the text

Each paragraph lands with the minute and second it starts. Recordings run to 30 minutes per file; anything after that is left out.

  3. 3

    Download it

TXT for notes, a Word file for editing, SRT or VTT for subtitles.

Does it work for Brazilian and European Portuguese?

It treats them the same way: the page sends one setting, Portuguese, with no regional option, so a recording from São Paulo, Lisbon, Luanda or Maputo is transcribed as Portuguese. Our test recordings were Brazilian, and the transcript kept their Brazilian spelling: umidade, controle, aprendizado.

Most spelling was unified by the 1990 Orthographic Agreement, but a few pairs still differ between the two standards, such as fato and facto or econômico and económico. If you write for readers in Portugal, Angola or Mozambique, look over those words before you publish.

How does Portuguese come out in the transcript?

With its diacritics and its hyphens. In our test the transcript wrote ã, õ, ç, â, ê and ô where they belong (“informações”, “não”, “pirâmide”) and kept pronouns joined to verbs, as in “acredita-se” and “combatê-los”.

Most counts and years
Written asDigits: “70 dentes”, “1940”
Sums of money
Written asSometimes words: “notas de cinco e cem dólares”
Units
Written asOften in full: “35 milímetros”, “70 km por hora”
Fractions
Written asAs signs: “29 ¾ polegadas por 24 ½”
Quotes and brackets
Written asDropped; asides set off with commas

Why is a converter set to Portuguese better than auto-detect?

Because Portuguese has close neighbours. Spanish and Galician share much of its vocabulary, and a short or muffled piece can be mislabelled when the language has to be guessed. With the language fixed, every piece is written in Portuguese spelling.

The reverse also holds: if your recording has long passages in English or Spanish, the main audio to text converter is the better choice, because it identifies the language of each piece separately.

What should you proofread in a Portuguese transcript?

Foreign names first. In our test Goethe became “Goult”, the Schengen zone became “Shenzhen” and the park service SANParks became “Sem Parques”. Then check compound words: “primeiro-ministro” and “bem-sucedidos” both lost their hyphens.

A handful of pieces also came back with no capital letter and no punctuation. They are easy to spot in a long transcript, and a minute with the audio fixes them.

FAQ

Portuguese audio to text: common questions

How much can I transcribe for free?

Every day you can transcribe 3 Portuguese recordings of up to 30 minutes each. You don’t create an account, and the text, Word and subtitle downloads are all part of the free converter.

Will it write ç, ã and õ correctly?

Yes. Cedillas, tildes and circumflexes were all in place in our Brazilian test transcript, in words such as “informações”, “declaração” and “pirâmide”. Mistakes there were rare; foreign names were the real weak spot.

Can I use it for a recording from Portugal or Angola?

Yes. The page treats every Portuguese accent alike, as there is no regional option to choose. Our tests used Brazilian recordings, so for European or African Portuguese read the words whose spelling differs between the standards, such as facto and fato.

Does it turn spoken numbers into digits?

Mostly. Years, ages and counts came back as digits, units were often written in full, and fractions appeared as ¾ and ½. One amount of money stayed in words, so check figures you plan to quote.

What happens to the audio I upload?

It isn’t kept. The browser sends short pieces over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which returns the words and discards the sound. NoteOwl stores neither the recording nor the transcript.

Can I get Portuguese subtitles for a video?

Yes. Drop the video file in, then download the transcript as SRT or VTT. Each line has its start and end time, so it lines up with the picture in YouTube or a video editor.
