How it works

How do you transcribe Chinese audio?

Add a Mandarin recording and the page does the rest: it cuts the sound into short pieces at pauses, writes each one in Chinese characters and lines the text up with its times. You can read along before it finishes.

  1. 1

    Add a Mandarin recording

A voice memo from your phone, a lecture, a podcast or a video call, as an audio or a video file.

  2. 2

    Characters appear in order

Every piece is written as Chinese, never detected, for up to 30 minutes of the recording.

  3. 3

    Copy or save

Copy the characters, or download Word, plain text, or SRT and VTT subtitles.

Does it write simplified or traditional characters?

Simplified. Run through a traditional-to-simplified converter, the Mandarin transcripts we checked did not change by a single character. If you need traditional characters for Taiwan or Hong Kong, put the text through a simplified-to-traditional converter afterwards.

Why is there so little punctuation?

Because most pieces come back with no punctuation at all, just characters. Where punctuation does appear, a plain comma (,) can sit beside a full-width 。 or 、. Plan to add ,and 。 yourself, which is quick with the audio and its paragraph times beside you.

Quotation marks such as “ ” and brackets are left out too, and the middle dot in foreign names goes: 詹姆斯·佩吉特 came back as 詹姆斯佩吉特.

What mistakes are typical in a Chinese transcript?

Homophones: characters that sound right but mean something else. 他 and 它 (both tā) swap, 钾 became 甲, 该镇 (the town) became 改正 (correct), and 人马座星系 came back as 人马做信息. Read the text for meaning, not just sound.

Years and counts
What came backDigits: 2011年8月, 400只, 3万只
Some amounts
What came backCharacters: 七十多颗, 五元和一百元
Latin terms
What came backKept in Latin letters: IT, pH
Foreign names
What came backIn characters by sound: 阿登布鲁克医院

Which kinds of Chinese does it suit?

Mandarin, the spoken standard of mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore, recorded clearly by one person at a time. English terms dropped into Mandarin, such as IT or pH, stay in Latin letters inside the Chinese text.

For a recording that moves between whole stretches of Mandarin and English, use the main converter: it detects the language of each piece instead of treating all of it as Chinese.

FAQ

Questions about Mandarin audio to text

Is the Chinese audio to text converter free?

Yes. It takes 3 recordings a day, the first 30 minutes of each, with no account and every download included.

Can I get traditional characters?

The transcript comes in simplified characters. Paste it into any simplified-to-traditional converter to get traditional script; the paragraph times are plain text and survive the conversion.

Does it write numbers as digits?

Mostly: years, months and counts such as 2011年8月 and 400只 came back as digits. Some amounts came back in characters, such as 七十多颗, so a document that needs one style will need a quick pass.

Is my Chinese recording uploaded and kept?

Short pieces of it are sent, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service, which turns each into text and discards it. NoteOwl itself stores no recording and no transcript; once you close the page, the text is gone unless you saved it.

Can I make Chinese subtitles?

Yes. Download SRT or VTT: each subtitle has its start and end time and its characters, ready for a video editor or a video site. Add punctuation first so the subtitles read naturally.

Can it translate Chinese into English?

No. It writes what was said in Chinese. Copy the transcript into a translation tool for an English version, and keep the Chinese original with its times to go back to the audio.
