How it works
How do you turn English subtitles into Chinese?
Drop the English SRT or VTT here; Chinese is already chosen under Into. Press Translate subtitles and the text is sent in batches of neighbouring subtitles, then written back as Chinese at the original times. Look it over and download.
- 1
Choose your subtitle file
An .srt or .vtt in English, Spanish, Japanese or another language on the From list; English is detected for you.
- 2
Translate into Chinese
Sentences split across two subtitles are translated together and divided again, one part per subtitle.
- 3
Save the Chinese subtitles
SRT or VTT ending in .zh, or a bilingual SRT with the original above the Chinese.
Do Chinese subtitles need less room than English ones?
Yes. Chinese takes about a third as many characters as the English it translates, and even with lines of 16 characters it needs about a fifth less room on screen. In our check, seven of ten translated test sentences fit on a single line.
The three that took two lines held the price, the date and the two names: every digit, space and Latin letter counts as a character too. Each subtitle still keeps its original time, so viewers simply get less to read in it.
Which Chinese script do the translated subtitles use?
Simplified characters, the standard in mainland China and Singapore: the page asks for simplified Chinese and checks that every reply is written in Chinese characters. For viewers in Taiwan or Hong Kong, convert the file to traditional characters and check words that differ by region.
Will viewers be addressed as 你 or 您?
As 你, the everyday form. “Can you send me the report before Friday?” became “你能在周五之前把报告发给我吗?”, and none of the 50 sentences in our larger test used 您. For a formal talk or a company message, change 你 to 您 where respect matters.
“Please sit down, sir.” came back as “请坐,先生。”: polite through 请 and 先生 rather than through the pronoun.
How do numbers and punctuation look in Chinese subtitles?
Full-width ,。?! and Arabic digits, with a space either side of each number: “会议将于 2026 年 10 月 16 日下午 3:30 举行。” The time keeps a 12-hour clock with 下午. If your style writes 2026年10月16日 with no spaces, removing them also saves room.

Are foreign names written in Chinese characters?
Sometimes. In our short test, “Dr. Patel 和 Maria Lopez” stayed in Latin letters, which can split across two lines. In a longer test, well-known names were written in characters, such as 拉奥尼奇 for Raonic. Decide which your viewers expect and make the file consistent.

FAQ
Chinese subtitle translation: questions
Is translating subtitles to Chinese free?
Yes. 3 files a day, each with up to 30,000 characters of subtitle text, and no account to open.
Can I get traditional characters?
Not from this page: it writes simplified Chinese. Run the downloaded file through a simplified-to-traditional converter, then read it once for words that Taiwan or Hong Kong say differently.
Is it Mandarin or Cantonese?
It writes standard written Chinese in simplified characters, the form read across the Mandarin-speaking world. It doesn’t write colloquial Cantonese.
Can I show the original and the Chinese together?
Yes. The bilingual SRT holds the original line above the Chinese line in every subtitle, at the same times, which helps learners on either side and anyone checking the translation.
How good is the Chinese translation?
In our test of 50 sentences, translation into Chinese scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Names, 你 or 您 and number formats are the things to read for before publishing.
Will the timing stay the same?
Yes, to the millisecond. Numbers and times come from your file unchanged, and no subtitle is merged or split, so the Chinese lines up with the video as the original did.
Is my file uploaded?
The browser opens it on your device. Only the subtitle text travels, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service, which returns the Chinese and discards the text. NoteOwl keeps no copy of either file.
