How it works

How do you transcribe Vietnamese audio?

Choose the recording and keep the page open. The sound is divided at pauses into short pieces, each piece is written in Vietnamese, and the paragraphs appear with their start times. When the last one arrives, copy the Vietnamese transcript or download it.

  1. 1

    Pick a recording

A Zalo or Messenger voice message, a recorded lecture, an M4A from an iPhone or a video file.

  2. 2

    Read the Vietnamese text

It fills in paragraph by paragraph, each with its time. The converter transcribes up to 30 minutes of every file.

  3. 3

    Download

TXT, Word, or SRT and VTT subtitles.

Does it write Vietnamese tone marks correctly?

Mostly. Our Vietnamese test transcript used ă, â, đ, ê, ô, ơ, ư and the tone marks throughout. Many of its slips were a single tone or vowel mark: “sốc” became “sóc”, “chuỗi” became “chui” and “sưu tầm” became “siêu tầm”.

Each of those is a real Vietnamese word, so a spell-checker won’t catch it. Read the transcript with the audio for anything you plan to quote or publish, paying most attention to rare and technical words.

Why does a Vietnamese transcript need a punctuation pass?

Because some pieces come back without full stops or commas. In our test, about a quarter of the pieces had no punctuation at all, and a few put a capital letter in the middle of a sentence where the speaker paused, as in “hóa chất Bạn có thể”.

The time at the start of each paragraph makes it quick to replay a passage and fix the breaks. Numbers were easier: counts, dates and measurements came back as digits, as in “tháng 8 năm 2011” and “15m”.

Does it understand northern, central and southern accents?

The page treats them all as Vietnamese; it has one setting. Southern speech merges the hỏi and ngã tones, which are written differently, so in a recording from the south check words carrying those two marks. For a strong regional accent, try a short clip first.

What happens to English names and words?

They are written the way a Vietnamese ear hears them. In our test “T. rex” became “tí bếp”, the Springboks became “Spring Book”, Cuomo became “Kumho” and Jerry became “Cherry”. Expect to correct every foreign name by hand.

For a recording with whole passages in English, use the main audio to text converter instead: it works out the language of each piece, so English stretches are written in English.

Can NoteOwl transcribe Vietnamese on a Mac?

FAQ

Questions about Vietnamese audio to text

Is the Vietnamese converter free?

Yes. Transcribe 3 Vietnamese recordings a day, up to 30 minutes each, without an account. All downloads are included.

Why set the converter to Vietnamese?

So the language is never guessed. With Vietnamese fixed, every piece is written in Vietnamese spelling with tone marks, even a short reply such as “dạ” or a quiet aside that could otherwise be mislabelled.

Does it keep the tone marks in subtitles?

Yes. SRT and VTT files are saved as UTF-8 text, so tone marks and letters such as ơ and ư appear in YouTube and video editors as they do on the page.

Is my Vietnamese recording stored?

No. Short pieces of the sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which writes them out and discards them. NoteOwl keeps no audio and no text.

How accurate is the Vietnamese transcript?

On a clear recording most words come back right, tone marks included. The slips that remain are mostly a wrong tone or vowel mark, foreign names and missing punctuation.
