How it works

How do you transcribe Greek audio?

Put the recording in the converter. It is cut at pauses into short pieces, each piece is transcribed as Greek, and the text appears with its times as it is ready. Once the last piece arrives, copy the Greek transcript or download it.

  1. 1

    Choose the file

A Viber or WhatsApp voice message, a recorded διάλεξη, an MP3 interview or a video.

  2. 2

    Read along

Paragraphs appear in Greek with their start times. Files are transcribed up to 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Save it

Copy the text, or download TXT, Word, SRT or VTT.

Does it write Greek accents and quotation marks?

Yes. Our Greek test transcript used monotonic accents throughout, kept a title in «» guillemets, and wrote elisions with an apostrophe: “Παρ’ όλα αυτά”, “γι’ αυτό”, “Κατ’ αναλογία”.

Loanwords ending in -εϊ lost their diaeresis and their e: “βόλεϊ” and “χόκεϊ” came back as “βόλι” and “χόκι”, closer to how they are said than how they are spelled.

Why are some Greek words misspelled though they sound right?

Because Greek writes the same sound in several ways. The sound i can be ι, η, υ, ει or οι, and e can be ε or αι, so the transcript sometimes picks the wrong one. Every slip below sounds exactly like the correct word.

  • i spelled wrong

“κακομεταχείρισης” became “κακομεταχείρησης”, and “ΗΠΑ” became “ΙΠΑ”.

  • e spelled wrong

“Συνιστάται” became “Συνιστάτε”, changing the verb’s person.

  • ει or ι

    “αλαζονεία” lost its ε: “αλαζονία”.

  • Double letters

“φυλές” and “αγέλες” came back as “φυλλές” and “αγέλλες”.

How are numbers and times written in Greek?

Mostly as digits, with ordinals in Greek style, as in “τον 3ο αιώνα π.Χ.”. Clock times came back spoken-style, “στις 12 η ώρα”, and some numbers stayed in words. One age was misheard, so check every figure.

“επτά θαύματα”

Are foreign names written in Greek or Latin letters?

Either, with no fixed rule. In our test “Greenwich”, “James Paget” and “Formula 1” came back in Latin letters where Greek writing often transliterates them, while Donald Trump was written in Greek as “Τόναλτ Τραμπ”.

Decide which style your document uses and make names consistent. For recordings with long passages in English, the main audio to text converter identifies the language of each piece instead.

Does it work for Greek from Cyprus?

The page treats all Greek the same way, with one setting fixed to Greek so no piece is ever guessed. Our tests used Greek from Greece; Cypriot Greek has its own sounds and words, so try a short clip of your speakers first.

FAQ

Questions about Greek audio to text

Is the Greek converter free?

Yes. Send 3 Greek recordings a day, each transcribed for up to 30 minutes, with no account needed and all downloads included.

Does it use polytonic Greek?

No. The transcript uses the monotonic system, with a single accent mark, as modern Greek has since 1982. For polytonic text, convert it with a dedicated tool afterwards.

Is my Greek recording stored?

No. Short pieces of the sound are sent over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards them. NoteOwl keeps neither the audio nor the text.

Can I make Greek subtitles?

Yes. Download SRT or VTT when the transcript is complete; every subtitle has its start and end time, and Greek letters and accents are kept.

How accurate is the Greek transcript?

Clear speech comes back almost word for word in sound, but Greek spelling has many ways to write the same vowel, so read for spelling slips, numbers and names.
