How it works

How do you translate a Croatian recording into English?

To translate Croatian audio to English, drop the recording here. It is transcribed as Croatian in short pieces, then the lines go into English in batches, each keeping its time. Read the English transcript, and open the Croatian one whenever a sentence needs a second look.

  1. 1

    Drop in the Croatian recording

A voice note from family, an interview, a lecture from Zagreb or Split: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and more.

  2. 2

    Croatian, then English

Transcribed in Croatian, then translated. Up to 30 minutes of each file.

  3. 3

    Read or save the English

Copy it, or save text or Word; the Croatian transcript is under Original.

How well is spoken Croatian understood?

Well. In our test, Croatian speech was transcribed with slips mostly in names and rare words, and the English translation of it was rated good. Proper names are the likeliest slips, so check those against the recording before you quote them.

The English often recovers the sense of a stumble: our test transcript wrote “snaga Uena” for the UN’s forces, and the English still read “UN peace forces”. A name misheard more badly may not be recovered, which is why names are the first thing to check against the recording.

What happens to Croatian case endings on names?

English drops them. Croatian changes the end of a name with its role in the sentence, and the translation gave back the plain form: “protiv Raonica” became “against Raonic”, and “u Flagstaffu u Arizoni” became “in Flagstaff, Arizona”. Search the English for names as people know them.

Does the English know who did what?

Usually, because Croatian verbs say it. Croatian often leaves out “he” or “she”, but its past tense shows gender: “Nedavno je izgubio meč” came back as “He recently lost a match”. Where a sentence gives no clue, the neighbouring lines, translated in the same batch, usually do.

Nedavno je izgubio meč protiv Raonica na turniru Brisbane Open.
EnglishHe recently lost a match against Raonic at the Brisbane Open tournament.
Uragan Fred trenutno ima vjetrove brzine 105 milja na sat (165 km/h)…
EnglishHurricane Fred currently has winds of 105 miles per hour (165 km/h)…
…od meteoritske kiše od prošlog srpnja.
English…from the meteor shower of last July.

How do Croatian months and measures come out in English?

In English form, figures untouched. Croatian has its own month names, and “od prošlog srpnja” became “of last July”; “105 milja na sat (165 km/h)” became “105 miles per hour (165 km/h)”. Check any figure that matters against the Croatian transcript, which shows it as heard.

FAQ

Croatian audio into English: questions

Is the Croatian to English audio translator free?

It is: 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no sign-up. The English and Croatian transcripts and all the downloads are included.

Can I translate a Croatian voice message?

Yes. Save the voice message from WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram as a file, usually OPUS or OGG, and drop it on the page. The English appears with the time of each line.

Will it mistake Croatian for Serbian or Bosnian?

No. This page tells the transcription service the speech is Croatian, so it is written down in Croatian spelling and Latin letters rather than guessed. Bosnian recordings have their own page.

What if the conversation switches to English?

Everything here is transcribed as Croatian first. For a recording that mixes Croatian and English, use the main audio translator and leave the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Are speakers labelled in the English?

No; the web transcript has words and times only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in the recordings it transcribes.

Is the recording uploaded?

The file itself stays with you. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the Croatian text to a cloud AI translation service; each throws away what it was sent, and NoteOwl stores nothing.
