How it works

How do you get English subtitles for a Croatian video?

To translate a Croatian video to English, drop it on this page. The browser takes out the sound, the Croatian speech is transcribed and translated, and English subtitles are timed to it. Watch with the SRT in your player, or publish it next to the video.

  1. 1

    Choose the Croatian video

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM: a vlog, a lecture, a family video, a clip from the news.

  2. 2

    English subtitles appear

Croatian speech is written down, then translated. Up to 30 minutes per video.

  3. 3

Save the English SRT or VTT

Original holds the Croatian subtitles with the same timing.

Do English subtitles keep up with Croatian speech?

Yes. Croatian and English ran about the same length in our test, so the English has the room the speech gives it: up to 2 lines of 42 characters, each subtitle on screen long enough to read at 17 characters a second.

The English is cut into subtitles from the translation, along its own sentences and pauses, so it needn’t line up one for one with the Croatian subtitles. Each still starts when its words are spoken.

What happens to names and places in the English subtitles?

They come back in the form viewers know. Croatian changes names with their role in a sentence, and our test returned them plain: “u Kini, Istočnoj Europi i Brazilu” became “in China, Eastern Europe, and Brazil”, “u Missouriju” became “in Missouri”.

Spelling is taken from the Croatian, not corrected: a driver the Croatian wrote as “Picquet Jr.” kept exactly that spelling in English. Proper names are worth a look before you publish.

…primjerice u Kini, Istočnoj Europi i Brazilu.
English subtitle…such as China, Eastern Europe, and Brazil.
Picquet Jr. smijenjen je nakon mađarskog Grand Prixa 2009. godine.
English subtitlePicquet Jr. was dismissed after the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Brazilac je zadobio tešku ozljedu glave…
English subtitleThe Brazilian suffered a severe head injury…

Do the subtitles add anything the speaker didn’t say?

Our test lines kept to what was said. “Točno u 8:46 nastupila je tišina” became “Exactly at 8:46, silence fell”, with no “a.m.” because the Croatian gave none. The subtitles follow the speech, so if a time or number looks wrong, check the Croatian under Original.

How reliably is Croatian speech written down for subtitles?

Reliably, with the usual slips in names and rare words. In our test, Croatian speech carried through to English with a good result. The Croatian subtitles under Original are what the English was translated from, so a strange English line is quickest checked there.

FAQ

English subtitles for Croatian videos: questions

Is the Croatian to English video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes of each, with no account or watermark; the English and Croatian subtitle files are both included.

Can I watch a Croatian film with these subtitles?

The first 30 minutes of it, as each video is translated up to that length. Load the English SRT in VLC or another player beside the video file.

Does it replace the Croatian voices?

No. It writes English subtitles; the Croatian soundtrack stays as it is, and your video file isn’t changed.

How do I put English subtitles on a Croatian YouTube video?

In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, add English and upload the SRT with timing. Upload the Croatian file from Original too, so both audiences can choose.

Do the subtitles show the difference between ti and vi?

No. English has only “you”, so a shift from the polite vi to the friendly ti, or back, isn’t visible to English viewers. The Croatian subtitles keep it.

Is my video sent anywhere?

Only its sound, in short pieces, to a cloud AI transcription service, and then the Croatian text to a cloud AI translation service; both discard it. The picture never leaves your device, and NoteOwl keeps nothing.
